Unfortunately my list is way too long.
Jay and I are readers. The house is home to eight hundred fifty or so titles according to our card catalog. We supplement it every week with the Boston Public Library's collection. We have only read through a third of the stacks at the main library in Copley Square. Other than new books we ran out of titles here at the local branch......

I've always been a fan of dystopia novels and existentialism, so I'll add:
A Clockwork Orange (Anthony Burgess) - The book is significantly different from the Stanley Kubrick movie, though I still thought the movie was real horrowshow, o my brothers.
Brave New World (Aldous Huxley)
The Outsider (Albert Camus)

"THE mystery?" Darn, I've been trying to figure out who it was, I'm going book hunting this weekend.

Wow... there are some really great recommendations so far. My list is getting longer and longer...

Brave New World (Aldous Huxley)
The Outsider (Albert Camus)
Some of my favorites.
I'd also add Orwell's 1984 and Animal Farm to that list.
My "must read" list is more by author than by title...
-H.G. Wells
-Jules Verne
-Kallistos Ware
And then, of course there are the classics of science fiction and horror...
-Frankenstein
-Dracula
And if you like my recommendations so far, you must check out The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen comics/graphic novels. They're amazing... Some of my favorite fictional characters, a little historical fiction, and enough steampunk to make me smile.
I just finished Volume 1 and I'm having a really hard time waiting until payday (Friday) to buy Volume 2... I'm really tempted to put it on my credit card, read it between now and payday, and then buy The Black Dossier when I get paid...

This is a fun thread. It is amazing the similar lines that most of us seem to be following.
Reading is stretching the mind and (in my ever so humble opinion) books are almost always better than the movies. I seldom go and see a movie made out of a book that I really enjoyed....I almost always get disappointed.
I haven't reviewed all the books to check, but the Harry Potter books are also a fun (if friviolous) read, especially now that they are all available for a one time read... again the movies don't come close.
So many books, so little time!

Indeed!
Personally, I like good old fairy stories and children's books. Not the new garbage, but the ones from away back when (can you tell I like C. S. Lewis yet )

Wow, lots o' great stuff! I would add that if you need a little nonfiction and a good laugh, read If Chins Could Kill, an autobiography by Bruce Campbell. It's a hoot!
