I thought I was offering another perspective and something for folks to think about.
I think the person who said that contemporary kilts are sometimes worn for shock effect has a valid point...at least from the POV of an observer. Maybe one that people too close to the subject can't quite see.
That said, I offer my sincere apologies.

I agree with myself.
I only found peace with this question after accepting the absolutely highest standard of deffinition for what a kilt is as the one true deffinition of a kilt. That ment everything else became a "kilt-like garment." I then had the freedom to wear my kilt-like garments as I saw fit because they are not real kilts.

We can't decide for the person asking the question. He will figure out how to deal with all this after we have given up trying to agree on the answer.

Do those of you who own both contemporary and more traditional tartan kilts notice a substantial difference in reactions from strangers based on the type of kilt you're wearing?
.
I own both, and the reactions I get are interesting. When I wear a tartan kilt, it is usually well received although comments vary from nice dress, nice skirt, and do you play the bagpipes.
When I wear one of my leather kilts or hemp kilts the comments range from awesome kilt dude.. neat, nice kilt!
It is odd that when wearing my contemporary kilts it is ALWAYS referred to as a KILT! not a skirt, not a kilt like garment.
That's my observation

Interesting. I figured that since I own my kilts, I can wear them whenever and however I want. Approval from others is always welcome but never required.

It's all in good fun... unless we're talking about emploiers and those types of situations.

I get a better response from people when I wear my tartan. when I wear my tan UK original people don't notice it right away like you would tartan. they also try and argue with me about how its not a kilt because its not plaid... so I just show them the pocket that says utilikilt. I tend to wear my UK a bit more because its not as warm as my tartans are, and with it reaching 70+ now (finally!) and having to sit in a classroom with no A/C a cool kilt is preferred, thats not saying that I don't wear tartan some though. I actually in a typical week wear Irish national monday, UK tuesday, Black watch wednesday, UK thursday, and then UK friday.
what irks me most is how people say that I shouldn't be wearing my UK so much and I should wash it. Ok, I have 1 pair of jeans and back when it was cold, I wore 1 pair of jeans for like 2 weeks strait with 1 day off for washing. I don't sweat in my UK near as much as I did in my jeans. I wash my UK after 1 solid week of wearing, (after the 7th kilted day) its never smelled and its never looked bad, why should I wash it any more?
bah most people don't know anything till they try it themselves!

In my experience, my Tartan Kilts are immediately recognised as Kilts, usually positively. But when I wear my Utilikilt, or Amerikilt(not much these days as the AK pleats curl horribly), that's when I usually get 'skirt' comments or puzzled looks.
Not that I particularly care, but I find the different reactions interesting.

I always thought the perfect crime was grave robbing. Maybe that's just because I was raised by a lawyer
