I appreciate greatly the sentiment behind the effort to recognize contribution to/in these campaigns.
That said, because there is no way of getting around the connection between the tartans and the medals, it is right and proper that the same rules about wearing the tartan be applied, lest the bearer disrespect/belittle the sacrifice of those that were there.
The rules may not be set up as such, but de facto, they should NOT be a universal.

As usual I agree with Phil. The overcheck is too busy for the eye to be comfortable. The idea of campaign metals and tartans is outstanding.

I'm not surprised to see a thread on this topic but i would say 'only in America'
It would just be another opportunity for those who hadn't done the business to jump on the bandwagon of those who have.

I mean no disrespect to those that have served their country, but looking through my British eyes the idea of wearing a tartan of the colours of a campaign medal ribbon is rather, well, sorry I can't think of other words, rather crass and brash. I am sure that every serviceman, or, woman, is proud to have served their country and their country recognises their service by honouring them with a medal and rightly so.To me, having a tartan made in the colours of a medal ribbon just cheapens the sacrifices that have been made. Where do you stop? Do you have a tartan for every medal? Sorry, but Nervous Jock really does have a point.

I like the idea, although the only one I qualify for is the National Defence Service Medal.
I don't believe I'd ever buy a kilt in that tartan because I don't like the colors and I would never wear a tartan based on a medal that I didn't earn.
As to whether or not someone who didn't earn the medal should wear the tartan, that's above my pay grade. STSC(SS) USN (Retired)

I have never seen this thread before and I recently had the exact same idea. I was driving down the road and saw a Vietnam bumper sticker, and it looked exactly like a thread count.
Good to see someone else has already brought this up though.
Cheers!

Campaign Tartan
Although I would not wear anything I didn't feel entitled to wear, it seems to me that if, as originally suggested the copyright fees / royalties were to go towards a not for profit fund that would in some way benefit those left behind by those who made the ultimate sacrifice in a particular campaign, then wearing that tartan would do honor to their memories. As has been mentioned, this may not amount to much, but anything is better than nothing.
Respectfully,
David

Perhaps a charity tartan is more appropriate than a campaign tartan

Such as if the Gurkha Welfare Trust adopted a tartan as a fundraiser...I'd be the first in line for that one.
