Depends on whether the building will be over-heated (as in the US), or as the the Scots do, just enough to keep the frost off the whisky glasses!

If I wear a tie, I wear the waistcoat. If I wear just a sport shirt or a mock turtleneck, I don't.

I would refer you to this wiki article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waistcoat#History . I was never under the impression the waistcoat was reserved for cold weather. I had understood that the waistcoat declined in popularity as fasion became more informal.

I think for me it breaks down into how hot it is, and if I'm wearing a tie. As a general rule for daywear, if its warm and the day does not call for a tie, I'll wear a colored shirt, (usally matching the hose) no vest.
If it's a little cooler, at night, or more formal, I'd go with a white shirt, vest and colored tie.

The demise of the waistcoat (along with two pair of trousers) was due to the necessity of rationing cloth during WWII. Men became used to buying suits w/o waistcoats and the extra trousers, and both retailers and manufacturers discovered that they could charge the same when supplying just a jacket and trousers. It was the lack of waistcoats that caused menswear to become less "formal", not the other way round.

I always go with the waistcoat, I just think it looks better on me that way.

It's a shame. I love the look of the waistcoat with a suit or kilt.

I prefer wearing a waistcoat. Besides the advantage of extra pockets, it keeps my tie from flapping about everywhere!

When I was growing up, I always wanted waistcoats with my suits, and they were a bit difficult to find. I recall watching my mother make my first one when I was a little kid.
Now, about thirty years later, they are starting to sell waistcoats at stores: Target , for example.
As much as I love wearing a waistcoat, I do have to admit that the hot weather out here can make it tuff to wear one if I have to be out and about.
