I heard the pipers during the opening as well and commented to the others in the room.
There is a chinese instrument, whose name escapes me, that sounds rather like a high pitched bagpipe. Some sort of split reed thing that, as I recall, looked rather like the instrument the snake charmer plays in the old movies.

Are you thinking of the Hulusi? That's just what I immediately thought of, but then again that's really one of the only chinese instruments I know (a friend is over there with Peace Corp and is learning it).
It does have drones, so I suspect it might get a similar sound, in that there's a melody with drones.
