Thanks so much! While perhaps not the recommended method, I just picked up supplies and dove in. There were some rocks under the water LOL but I'm dog-paddling around now. I found the short videos at Knitting Help to be invaluable. I also bought Knitting for Dummies, but found it less helpful.

The pattern from CalanaCraft is written out in semi-plain language, which helped vs. deciphering the code that patterns are usually written in. I don't think she is selling pattern #1 any more, but if you do get a copy, I'd be happy to pass along some specific pointers. She is supposed to have a second pattern out soon and I'm looking forward to learning cables. . . I think. . . check it out at Yahoo Groups KiltHoseKnitAlong link

Thanks for the info! I agree with you about the Knitting for Dummies - total waste of time for me! I thought quilt patterns were hard until I got that book.
I'm much more of a visual learner, so a lot of the patterns, even if the directions are good, don't make sense to me. If I watch someone else, I usually get it right away, so I will be sure to look up the videos you mentioned.

It is all ways easier for me to watch and repeat (monkey see monkey do) than learn from written material. KnittingHelp.com has a number of good videos that I learned from. There are also a lot of videos on YouTube that are helpful.

You might also pick up your phone book yellow pages an look for Local Yarn Shops (LYS) they often have classes or if you buy the yarn and supplies there will teach you one-on-one between other customers.

One last option would be to search the net for knitting or fiber guilds in your area. They are helpful to new knitters.

Looking forward to you posting pictures of first set of kilt hose.

Really wonderful. If I can achieve something like what you have done here I will die happy.
