It's worth a shot. Just make sure to mix the dye with water really well first and stir a lot when the hose go in.

Well if you really must dye, I guess you must, but I found that my cream hose came in really handy last month when I chose to wear a cream colored sweater with my Ireland's National Tartan. I don't think any other hose would have looked as well.

Has anyone tried using dye made from walnut hulls?

I noticed the hulls stain water really dark brown, so leached some out last fall. It makes a good wood stain but I haven't tried it on anything else.

I have a pair of Higgins (I think they are 80% wool) cream hose I would like to try.

I'm not sure how well the walnuts will dye the hose, but it will certainly dye your skin if you don't take precautions, rubber gloves for instance.

At least it will if the old novels I read are to be believed - the heroes were always darkening their skin with walnut shells in order to pass unnoticed during their adventures to right wrongs and rescue fair maidens or wretched prisoners of tyrants.

Perhaps it will colour any absorbant surface - but the only way to find out is to try it. I do have the uneasy feeling that you might end up with brown legs and feet.....

Walnut hulls do indeed make a dandy dye. I've used it on cotton cloth, but not on wool or blend yet.

I actually just dried my hands after dying a pair of cream wool blend hose with Navy blue Rit dye. They aren't dry yet, but so far they look great. Lovat-y blue for sure, much like the Lovat-y green in the photos a few posts back.

I didn't use salt or detergent, BTW, tap water (barely warm), and a 20 minute soak in one gallon of water with the whole packet of Rit powdered dye. Will try to snap a photo when they dry.
