The US Army jacket I mentioned has a tag that reads:

    Jacket, Man's, Water Repellant Army
    Black 385 with liner

It goes on to say that it is specification UOCS-06-80 and Certification 8-2076-KL.

It was made by Blauer Mfg. Co. of Boston.

When my Dad was in the Army, he had rank pins on the epaulettes, but nothign sewn on, so if you find one in a surplus store it can look good as new, even if it's worn. It's not "puffy" like a flight jacket. In fact, it fits like a Levi's jean jacket -- just it's warmer.

The US Army uses a couple of different fleece jackets or liners that can be seen around wear I live. Here is a link for regular folks to purchase them if you think any of them might work with a kilt.

Tobus asked about the NPS "pop bottle" jacket. NPS uniform items are only available to NPS personnel, but this jacket from L.L. Bean is close:

The NPS version is a cross between this and a "flight jacket" with gathered sleeves and hem.

Also check out the Tanker Jacket, under "Related Items" down the page.
The 'woolly pully' has been on my list of wants for quite some time. But I do already have a vintage military sweater (more of my dad's surplus) like this one. I actually like the buttons and collar on that sweater better than any other sweater I've found, anywhere. I am very fond of that sweater, and I always look forward to cool weather just so I can wear it.

That's an interesting jacket. I like the collar on it, and the overall look is unique. I also like the "washed canvas bomber" below it. So many choices, arrrgh!

Don't forget our buddies in Freeport, Maine:

...scan through the five or six pages of coats and you'll find several possibilities.

They have a very nice commando sweater, too...I have one in Navy and will probably get one in the green this year.

Another good suggestion. A "field/barn" style coat from Bean, Woolrich, etc. is similar to a Barbour in cut and might work.

I wear my grandfather's beat-up old field jacket from the war, most of the time, and it gets the job done; it's "high waisted", so even though it's a bit long, I still think it looks ok. If a little sporan coverage bothers you, having cutaways put in would be pretty straightforward...

After much searching and thinking, I think I'm going to go with an original WWII era Eisenhower jacket. Man, it's hard to find one exactly like I'm looking for, and in my size!

In the meantime, here is a pretty darn cool modern incarnation of the Ike jacket that someone might be interested in:
