There are only six bourbon distilleries in Kentucky, according to the Kentucky Distiller's Association. (Other US whiskey distilleries produce grain alcohol that technically qualifies as bourbon - under NAFTA - but they are generally not marketed as bourbon.)

There are more than that in Kentucky, but they won't be on any list anytime soon.
One of the best bourbons I've EVER drank was brought to me by a friend from Themiddleofnowhere, KY. All I know is that it was aged in white oak, and it *ahem* "didn't have no tax on it." I kid you not, it was one of the tastiest, smoothest whiskys I've ever sampled.
When I asked him a few years later, he told me that his source had dried up and no more was to be had. :-(

Whiskey is whiskey.....
Scotch, Bourbon, Canadian..... it all comes from our ancestors. On what was available. And of course taste. Some like heavy peat... some don’t. Some like the bitterness of rye, some dont. its the person, and what they like that determines the perfect taste. 'nuff said….

George T. Stagg is more Whiskey than I can handle. Let me tell you it's considered one of the best bourbons you can drink but it was way too strong for me. Felt like it was burning a hole in my throat the entire way down. The man that can drink George T. Stagg while still smiling the whole time is more of a man then I will ever be, and that aint easy for me to say, believe me.

A LONG time ago, friends were doing some work down Ky way, and brought back 6 mason jars full of white lightning. It tasted a bit like turpentine, but in a good way.
Never tasted anything like it since, to my sadness.

Well Woot22, as I said, that's according to the Kentucky Distillers Association. I only did a quick search, not an exhaustive one. Not all distilleries in the state are members of the KDA, and it's possible the website hasn't been kept up to date.
It's also been difficult for the casual observer (like myself) to keep track of, as the various companies/brands/labels keep getting bought and sold, and as some family members pass away, their interests in the various companies also get traded around.

I haven't tried this yet and have never tasted true "white lightning". Those who have may want to give it a try to compare...
