The 19th century editions are most certainly out of copyright, and scans are available on the web, with a little looking.

Progress is slow sometimes but at least I am making some. Ive modified the main cloak body to be a bit fuller around the lower section and also to fit better in the chest and arms. The arms needed opening up a bit in order to accept me wearing a kilt jacket or sweater. The original pattern had two front pieces, two backs sections and two mid sections. Basically I ripped up the mid section and added cloth starting at two inches wide at the under arm and ending up at 6 inches at the base. A bit of pinning and cutting at the arms made the chest fit nice and the arms open enough. I have tried this on with a jacket and various heavy sweaters and have plenty of room. The original pattern has sleeves which I wont add so this allows the expansion of the arm holes. The lower portion comes about upper mid calf so it is about the right length.

Evil twin brother doing the modeling for me, I can stick more pins in him than me.

The modification allowed me to reduce the pattern to two fronts and two back sections thus eliminating the mid section.

All of the photos of Inverness capes Ive seen have the upper cape down to about wrist level. The simplicity pattern has it very short, sort of elbow length. I took the front and back caplet parts and fit them to length for my arms. Having long arms these may seem long but when sewn in and the loss of seam allowances it will come just to my wrists. So now a little more tweaking and then time to hold my breath and cut my material...... Measure twice ... cut once

    Front view of cape section

Back section of the cape. This will be of heavy coat weight wool so it should hang nicely.

    More photos as progress continues.

My tailor's form is expanded to my chest size and sitting on the stool I have it on it is about my height. This makes it very convenient to stand next to it and mark places I need to tailor out.

Boy, everything you're doing looks great! This is the same pattern I have, so I very much appreciate your posts. My first effort will be a raincoat, then tweed. This may take a while...

Are you going to add pockets? I have plans to add them to my tweed cape, between the lining and shell.

Oh yes, some nice warm deep welt pockets about hip level. One thing for sure is my hands get cold therefore I get cold so pockets are a must.

Thanks Paul. Progress will be slow, as we are behind the 8 ball getting ready to lay some laminate flooring down before new living room furniture arrives in early March. Started packing up the living room last night, hope to continue tonight, then busy next two nights (Friday is Burns Supper!), then go at it over the weekend. Need to wash the ceiling and paint it, same with the walls, and remove the wood stove to put in a new tile base. We have a long weekend the 3rd weekend in February, and hope to get enough done then (about 300 sq. ft.) to take delivery of the furniture. Then I have 600 more sq. ft. to install! Grrr. Hopefully we will make some progress on the cape anyways!

    Best of luck to you!
