Actually this reinforces a very old custom: you wear a Dirk Belt when you wear a Dirk.
In my vintage Highland Dress catalogues the belts are referred to as "Dirk Belts" because that was their purpose. (Their purpose was not to hold up the kilt.)

That was my understanding too:

Jock Scot has pointed out (post #39) that ". . .in normal events the dirk is rather overdone and definitely more theatrical than traditional". But the subject of the photo being a pipe major, it's not surprising he'd tend to be a bit more ostentatious in his attire.

Quite right, I didn't make it sufficiently clear that after quoting him I was paraphrasing what he'd said in the other post.
"It's all the same to me, war or peace,

I still think that Nathan's waistcoat looks great and that he/you should wear it.

I can't believe I didn't notice the dirk right off. D'oh! Sigh.

What say you, lads & lasses?
Here you go, Father.

Go for it!
I've done that on Tartan Day when I couldn't wear a kilt to work:
"It's all the same to me, war or peace,
I'm killed in the war or hung during peace."
