Rules
For a comparison to another regional dress that has almost become a national costume, consider American Western attire. I've never seen a book of rules, and casual wear of denim jeans is almost universal, but you have to admit that, without some care, it is possible to get up a Western outfit so ridiculous as to invite contempt anywhere. At best you just look like a dude, at worst like a parody of a Hollywood cowboy likely to get punched out in any bar with real cowboys.

I don't see kilts solely as a Scottish garment. I see them as Celtic garments
Well said Bear, this is something I've been thinking about lately. As an Englishman I like to think I have the liberty to borrow what i please from the various celtic cultures:
Humour from the English
Music and beer from the Irish
Kilts and whiskey from the Scots
and much more.. I have as much love for the Irish, Welsh, Cornish and Manx cultures as I do the Scottish.

Graham, good approach. It's fun to be a cultural infidel

So, back to the original topic.
I was wondering if anyone has one of the sporrans with the animal's head on it. I was wondering how people react to them. I have visions of women passing out and being attacked by PETA if I wore one of those in public.
Just wondering.

You would have some problems, but only from people that didn't think it was a well-behaved pet and start petting it. Of course, if you sit for dinner wearing it turn it to the side otherwise it might look like a critter casing out the chow

So yes, the level of the formality of the occasion should dictate the sporran day or night. You shouldn't wear a fur silver mounted sporran if you are going to bars in your kilt at night, but you should wear it to a wedding (asssuming it is a formal wedding) that takes place in the morning.
Isn't it amazing - away a week and the list of new posts is endless!
I have two sporrans. A black leather 'day wear' type and an all leather 'formal' shape, with metal cantle. This one is fine for evening and more formal without it being a hairy sporran, which I'm not altogether keen on. Now we've got that sorted, they'll be telling me there's a protocol for jackets next

Yow! That petting thing would be awkward!
Thanks for the laugh Bubba!

Rufus, I wouldn't worry too much about PETA. It's been my experience that while those folks are willing to throw paint on a housewife or starlet wearing fur they never throw paint on a Hell's Angel wearing leather and fur!

Sporrans
I've just had a wicked idea for an all leather sporran that might do for day or evening wear, even for the kilt cops. More on this once I work out the details.
(Don't worry Phil, I'm finishing your kilt before I start a new project.)
