I like all whisky, I am afraid it may be the active ingredient which I find compelling. However, the peat monsters are my favourites, Laphroaig and Lagavulin being amongst the very best on my palate. However, I am coming to think I may not have very sophisticated taste buds, I don't think I get all the nuances that some of you do, especially from the lighter malts. I also find my taste in all things wine, cheese and meats I am attracted to the most powerful of flavours (Malbec, Blue and Game). I used to say I had "acquired" these tastes but on reflection I don't ever remember not liking them. It could be I just need the taste equivalent of a sledgehammer to really take notice.

It is hard for me to describe what I get from the really peaty whiskys but it is something very natural, rustic and full of vital life essence akin to fresh cut hay, wood smoke and perhaps even a hint of cow manure. Before you jump to conclusions I have lived my whole life on farms and rural environments and all theses odors are quite pleasing comforting and homey to me. I bet the odors and taste which surrounded us as children have a lot to do with what we like as adults. I wonder if I like smokey whisky because my father, who I loved dearly, always had a pipe in his mouth?

    Darn!

I'm sitting here in my new Sinclair Modern, I'm heading to Kilwinning Lodge this evening, and you've convinced me: Laphroaig Quarter Cask and a visit to the back deck are in order!

Singlemalt: Taste and olfaction are exceedingly subjective. One man's nectar is another's poison. It wouldn't surprise me a bit, if our preferences were strongly influenced by our experiences in our childhood, as you suggest.

I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

I currently have a bottle of quarter cask in my liquor closet. Along with a bottle of 10 yr-old, and a bottle of cask strength. Laphroaig 10 yr-old is my "go to" whisky.

And childhood associations are probably true. My dad was a scotch drinker.
