When I was just hitting puberty, my grandfather (RIP) took me down to the tobacconist to buy me a pipe because it was time to teach me "how to smoke like a man." On my birthday the next year, we went back to the tobacconist for a lesson on cigar smoking.
I smoked that pipe occasionally until I moved away for university and kind of forgot about it, although I continued to smoke the occasional cigar, mostly Cuban or Dominican. A buddy of mine recently inherited a small collection of pipes from his uncle's estate, which I have been spending some time restoring for him. It has brought on a bit of pipe renaissance for me
I used to smoke the house blends back home (black and tan or black Cavendish), but now I'm trying some tins of tobacco. I picked up some Peterson University Flake (lightly cased Virgina/Burley) and Connoisseur's Choice (aromatic recipe on Cavendish/Virginia). Next up I'd like to try McLelland Classic Samsun (Oriental) and Frog Morton's Cellar (English blend of Latakia/Virgina with cube of wood from a whiskey barrel sitting in the tin). After seeing several recommendations here, I'll put Erinmore on the list.
It would also be good to find a blend that the lady of house will approve of. She says she loved the pipe tobacco that her Greek neighbour used to smoke, but unfortunately doesn't know what it was.
