I live in NYC too, (West Village) I just wear mine when I feel like it. I teach part time and my students get a real kick out of it, especially the international ones. Also up in CT, perfect for walks and hikes. Go for it and enjoy, the UES (aka High-rise CT) is a good location to get started!

I am also a teacher who wears a kilt; do your students have a nick-name for you?
Best,
Jonathan

I know of two: The Kilted Wonder and Kilt Man. There may be others but these are the two I’m aware of.

Andrew, as Steve said earlier in this thread, just wear it. It will soon become second nature. Except when out on my push bike, I'm kilted all the time, I do have a selection for different occasions, but would no longer feel properly dressed or comfortable in anything else. Judging by this site, you probably have a better chance of coming across another kilted fellow in NYC than you do here in Derbyshire, UK or indeed any where else in England.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!
