    Is it typical to have a "condensed" version and an "expanded" version of the tartan? Notice how much broader the tartan in the shawl is from the skirt - it really shows the purple bordering the heather stripes of the kilt, while in the skirt the purple is far less noticable.

    Thanks for a great tartan finder site David...still think it looks like the Isle of Skye tartan..."swatch" on that site is too small to tell if its the ancient or modern. Suspect the later.

    Did we ever get the official word?

    I think I agree with the Isle of Skye. You can see in this swatch the purple clearly. The Maclay tartan has too many black stripes, and blue in the centre of the green stripe.
