I believe it to be Anglicised from Mac Eachaidh, 'son of Eachadh', a name meaning 'horseman'. The pronunciation would roughly be MAC EKH-AY. The phonetics of the Anglicisation and the original don't really match at all, of course, but they rarely ever do!

Great Thread. Having tried my hand at Scottish Gaelic only to put it down to focus more on pipe music (another form of Gaelic I suppose) I have to say I admire your talents here. It really peaks my curiosity...

So I can't help trowing in a few family names to see how you work them.

Lanier- French (not sure if it's something about falcons or the lazy)
    Holcombe- Anglo-something
    Peirie- Scottish, but from Aberdeen-shire.

LANIER French, occupational name probably from laine meaning 'wool'.
HOLCOMBE English topographical surname from Anglo-Saxon 'hol' meaning 'deep' or 'hollow', and cwm, which was Brythonic Celtic (i.e. Welsh, Cornish, and Breton) for 'valley'.
PEIRIE Anglo-Norman, from Pierie, a diminutive of Piers, the Norman version of the personal name 'Peter'.

Thanks! I haven't been able to read the whole thing either!

HARRIS A patronymic meaning 'son of Harry'. Usually either Welsh or English. The original Welsh form would be Ap Harri, while the English form is cognate with Harrison.

    Slohairt, you are a gem.

So.... Urquhart. I've read in some sources it was of pictish origin, others Gaelic from Airchartdan, translated as "upon a rowan wood" but also as "the fort on the knoll." What say you?

    Wolfhawk:

    IRISH Faolchú-Seabhac (pronounced FAIL-KHOO-SHA-WACK)
SCOTTISH GAELIC Faolchu-Seabhag (as above, basically)

Faolchú literally means 'wild hound'. Mac tíre is another Irish name for 'wolf'. It means 'son of the land', which is interesting considering the usual scorn heaped upon the wolf during European history.

Seabhac is a bit of a catch-all term for falcons, hawks, etc.
