Yeah Mike...got my Edzell from Alexis also. Saw your earlier post about it not being in production when I was thinking about ordering a Polaris. I wonder where the USNA Pipe Band gets theirs from. Guess we could mug a couple of middies and get enough material.

Most mills will weave custom tartan for a reasonable price if you want to order 30 yards or more. If it's double width, that's only 8 kilts, so it's no stretch for a pipe band to get tartan woven in whatever they want.
When our band orders kilts (I don't make them, because I get bored doing the same tartan over and again), we order them from Burnett's and Struth in Ontario. We order kilts from them on a regular basis, and they just order a 30-yard bolt from Lochcarron in double width and make our kilts as the orders come in (Lochcarron normally sells the MacGillivray only in single width).
If you ever want a length of Polaris, D.C. Dalgliesh does weave single kilt lengths. It's not cheap, but they do beautiful work. They're the only mill I know of that will weave a single kilt length.
Cheers!

LOL, gotta love them middies. I never could convince them that they didn't have to salute me untill they got up to about their senior year. Best one I ever delt with was a third class middie that qualififed submarines (enlisted) during his kiddy cruise.
And yep, if it was over a kilt, I'd mug one in a heartbeat...

They use to send middies down to RTC Orlando in the summertime to observe us pushing boots. The MTO had the brilliant idea that it would be a good for Company Commanders to salute the middies. (Yeah, you know how far that went). The next year they decided to give the middies officer caps and ensign bars to fool us. Didn't work too well since at the time there were no ensigns assigned to RTC. They were told to challenge us if we did not salute. I guess one got up the nerve, unfortunately he challenged the BMCM that was in charge of Damage Control and Firefighting. They were back in their middie uniforms the next morning.

I used to have a great time with middies when I was a senior in Army ROTC in college.
The Navy guys apparently used to really get on their freshman middies that they had to salute the officers from not only NROTC, but ROTC and AFROTC as well. And the freshmen got so nervous about it when they saw someone who wasn't NROTC (because our insignia were different) that they'd be just about shaking when they got to the point of saying "Good morning, sir" or whatever.
I'd just respond by yelling something like "Drive on, Navy! Hooah!" and watch them pee themselves.
Ah... good times. Good times.

Other than just being a stupid idea I see a whole lot of UCMJ violations in this. My question though is this; Did the kid survive the encounter with the Bosun? I would have loved to watch that trip to the paint locker...lol

I think it was against some kind of regulation to mention the words "common" and "sense" together in the same sentence at RTC. From what I understand there were two middies together and I suppose he thought there was safety in numbers. I probably shouldn't have said "challenge" because all the kid said to him was "Aren't you supposed to salute?". He probably thought he would test the waters on him because at the time the chiefs assigned to DC&F could wear wash khakis. Maybe because he didn't see ribbons but I would think the lack of a neck would have been a red flag.

I had some like that happen to me when I was in the Marine Corps.
I had just got back from a double CAX, (Combined Arms Exercise in 29 Palms CA.) and before that a MUE (Marine Expeditionary Unit 6 months on ship floating all over the place)
and was heading into the chow hall with a few of the guys from my shop. there were a gaggle of kids in half Marine uniforms we giggled and went on about our way but one of the kids that had on what looked like some rejected start trek rank insignia butted in front of us and informed us he was a company commander. Well needless to say about 6 or 7 Corporals and Sergeants commenced to chewing this kids butt so bad tears started to well up in his lil’ eyeballs.
I honestly think he very well could have changed his mind about the military right at that moment. I know it had to have been the worst butt chewing that this kid had ever thought about getting. WOW that was the good old days. I think after that we had the kid hold the door for everybody until the chow hall was about closed.
