Of what possible importance is the question?
If someone wants to call a towel and a hank of yarn a kilt, whose place is it to argue with them yea or nay?

Perhaps to better understand another's point of view? Seems a worthwhile endeavor to me.
If the question were asked in a different way, say, "What beliefs, experiences, motivations, and expectations cause some people to define a kilt in narrow terms, and others more broadly," would that help?
However, as others have pointed out, this topic seems to come up often enough, so a review of past threads might be a starting point for Sylvain. Can anyone supply some starting points?

Good suggestion Rex.
My question is who cares? If UKs, AK, and other non-trads make it easier, and more acceptable to wear a kilt, traditional or other, than accept them and be glad that some one with different taste is making your life a bit easier.

Come on, Bob C! Let's say you walk into a strange bar and see me in a black & gold Pittsburgh Kilt, and 20 guys in jeans. You gonna come sit by me and have a beer, or you going to go over and sit by Joe Trousers? Sure, you're a rabbit and I'm a hare, but we're both lagomorphs! Why do you want to keep me out of your little club?

As I've grown up a bit these past few years I care less and less if someone decides to refer to my kilt as a skirt. A belted plaid is definitely a blanket, but the modern kilt is very much a skirt-ish garment.
And I don't have time to deal with people who call it a skirt trying to get a rise out of me. There are better reasons to start a fight.
[Edit to stay on topic]: I consider UKs and other sorts of non-traditional kilts to be just that, non-traditional kilts. I know people who think they wouldn't want to wear tartan, but would very happily wear a UK.

I don't want to keep anyone out. It's only nomenclature.
Besides, if I walked into a bar and saw you in a black and gold PK, my first thought would be that you were one of those bandwagon Steelers fans who have sprung up, lately!

Without change, there can be no progress...
Are bluejeans trousers?
Why wouldn't a UK or AK be a kilt? Because it's not tartan?
