Cumberbunds just remind me of high school prom - ill clad, uncomfortable, self conscious teenagers. The waistcoat is traditional highland attire and flows with the lines of the Prince Charlie jacket.

The cummerbund issue has come up before - if I remember correctly, the general consensus was "go with a waistcoat,"
but if you are going to go with a cummerbund, go with one that does not clash with the kilt, make sure that it covers the top of the kilt, and forgo the waistcoat. (You may want to fact check me on this with the search function.)

Of course, you may want to run the kilt/cummerbund combination idea past your fiancee. She may like you in a kilt, she may like you in a cummerbund, but the two together ...

I've worn cummerbunds with a kilt twice - both times as a member of a wedding party, and with an argyle. I think it looks okay, not as nice as a waist coat, but okay. Both times I was "uniformed" with the other groomsmen from the waist up, highland from the waist down. Of course, some places are too hot for a waist coat and jacket, and while it's not ideal, I think a non-distracting (preferably black) cummerbund and matching tie is acceptable, especially if your SO likes it.

    James,

I haven't been following this thread for some unknown reason but now that I have found it I just hope it's not too late.

I'm sorry to say but none of the outfits that you have put together have quite the right flare, not quite the right panache.

May I suggest you add a set of yellow flashes and a yellow feather fly plaid.

Alternately a silver lame vest or one with with a subtle rhinestone studded pattern.
