No, Matt is talking about a single width (27 inches), custom run (4 yards needed for a box pleat kilt). This is a "normal" double width (54 inches or so) worsted wool tartan material. With this, 4 meters (1 meter is 3 inches longer than a yard) will be enough material for either a cut and splice 8 yarder or two 4 yard box pleat kilts.

ok so who is in? Can we get enough together for the 16 or no?
I'm down for 4 meters either way but would prefer the 16 over the 14.

I am in either way, I agree 16oz would be nicer. Will have to go 5 meters for myself due to me 47 inch gut! That will leave a small amount for other things. Or, maybe two box pleats.

I'd prefer 16 oz but I'm in for 4.0 meters whichever way it goes

Reason: 1. i'll go either way 2. Change in amount requested from 4.5 to 4

I might be able to get the wife to turn loose of enough for PV. I would prefer wool as well, but just can't swing that much cash. Not unless I can start selling some of my Masonic items.

I'm in if it's 16-oz wool.
I'm not clear on this single/double width business, but I know I need 9 yards to make a knife-pleated tank to fit me.
If I order 9 yards of double-width, I assume that this would mean that I could cut it into three kilt lengths, one of 9 yards and two of 4.5 yards?
Or is there some splice and dice arrangment going on here where if two people each order 4 yards of double width, they get it delivered as 8 yards of single width each?
Best regards

I've had the pleasure of working with F&K cloth in both 14 oz weight and in 18 oz weight. I have to say I've never worked with their 16 oz weight. But I can say, from that experience, that their 18 oz weight is far superior to their 14 oz. I have to admit I had some trouble working with the 14 oz, and for some reason it was a dickens to get a pleat to stay pressed in the X Marks kilts I've made. I don't know if this is characteristic of all their 14 oz cloth, or just that particular run.
However, I've made a few kilts from their 18 oz cloth (MacKenzie tartan) and it is just a joy to work with. Really soft, great hand, and really pleats up well.
So, while I have no direct experience with their 16 oz cloth, I'm assuming it will behave better than the 14 oz. And hey, 18 oz would be great!
I'm not ordering cloth, so I don't really have a say in what you guys decide to do. But I figured as someone who may potentially be making kilts from whatever cloth ya'll order, I'd voice my opinion. Heavier the better!
(Oh, and to answer another question, the $65 per yard heavy kilt weight wool I mentioned at the beginning of the thread is available for any individual to order at any time, as the minimum is only 4 yards. This is really great quality kilting cloth, woven in Scotland. Yes, it's more expensive, but you also don't have to put in a group order. So for those of you who want the cloth without having to wait or depend on others, it's always there as an option).

At those prices let me change my order to 5.5 meters, 16 oz. wool, double width. (Might as well to get the fly plaid at the same time.)

I'm definitely in for 2-meters double-width or 4-meters single-width of the F&K 16-oz wool.
Just let me know let me know who to send the money to, how much & when!
And yes, Matt, you will be making a kilt from the cloth I order!
