I found my ladle in a combination antique/hardware store. I've seen several similar in antique stores since then for $10 and less.

I called the local black powder store, and they have several that I am going to stop by and look at. I already have a blow-torch, so I think soon, I am going to try this with one of the antler blades.

This was a great tutorial. It inspired me to begin a sgian myownself, even though I have zero experience making knives or anything along those lines. I at the point where I am ready to make and pour the "pewter."
I do have a question or three...
Isn't real pewter lead free? Is there an advantage to using lead free pewter? If so where can one get a small ingot (enough to do three bolsters...how much would that weigh?) and how much will it cost?
Is there an advantage to using the "poor man's" pewter as you describe? Are the 50/50 and the 100% tin solder available in local hardware stores? If not where can it be found?
thanks..
Again, good on you mate.

yes ,it is lead free

Lead can enter your blood steam through the skin, so 50/50 should not be used for jewlery
I make my sheaths tall enough to cover the bolster so there is no skin contact while wearing
