something else, on this thread: in Matts article at http://www.albanach.org/drawstring.htm, he refers to the prtrait of Mungo Murray. When I try the drawstring on the inside, I just can't seem to ge the drawstring to "show", on the outside, as there is too much material, above the belt - however, if the drawstring was on the outside, it would, of course, show, on the outside. Also: notice that the kilt IS pleated across the front!!

There is also a portrait of Kenneth Sutherland, Lord Duffus, wearing a belted plaid that is pleated in front.
So, wearing one's pleats in front has a historical basis! 
Of course, I suspect the plaids in these two cases are also pleated in the back.

Tartan seen on Mungo Murray portrait is a good looking one. Would be nice to make kilt suit out of it.
