Personally, I like the look of a kilt that is at mid-knee to the bottom of the knee. However, when a kilt is four or five inches below the knee, I think it's a kilt don't.

It does seem that most of the historical pictures I find on kilts show the hem either at or above the top of the knee.

I have a kilt that ended up being too long, so it hit me at 1 1/2 inches below the bottom of the knee. What I found is that it was a bit uncomfortable when walking and very uncomfortable when running.. and didn't play well with the kilt hose. I have hemmed this kilt to just at the top of the knee. I feel that top to mid-knee is the natural evolution of the length of the kilt. It just seems to be the most comfortable and looks best.

    I am not a trollop!

My kilts end around the top of my knees.

I wear my traditional kilt at the top of the knee or above.

I purchased a denim utilikilt that was long and it hit me just below the knee. That one was the most comfortable kilt I ever had, especially sitting. Being longer the back was more comfortable sitting for me. My backside must be big because most kilts only cover part way and the hem hits me in the ... well you know. With the longer kilt there was no surprises for the boys sitting on cold benches. Thats all I am saying about that.

We keep the house kinda cool in the winter so the denim over the knees also helped keep me warm.

Kilt hose usually makes just about any knee, no matter how funky looking, look good.

Not quite right, Graham. At school in Scotland we were dressed at just above mid-knee, as you say, but if you think about it, the top of the knee cap makes more sense from a comfort point of view. And that's the length that doesn't draw condescending looks in Scotland today. With regard to UK's recommended length -- it's a bit like wearing grunge. The fashion at 15, but one hopes that age and the need for comfort will educate.
