I was not trying to imply that the Gurkhas would be a cheap source of military forces for the US or Canada. I was trying to say that if Britain would not provide a home for them then I for one would be happy to welcome them here. If they required employment I am quite sure that their skills would be appreciated and appropriately paid for, and would be a better investment than Wakenhut or Blackwater.

It is not the British People who were not happy to provide them with a home, it is Government that tried to make the rules and it is Government that got put in its place (at least for once!).

The House of Commons is finally doing the right thing. If the US can do right by the Philippinos, then the UK can do right by the Gurkhas!

Amen, Colonel. May the "Battling B******ds of Bataan", American and Philippino, never be forgotten by the all free men and women.
And for that matter, let's not forget the Brits, Indians and Canucks at Hong Kong, the Brits and Aussies at Singapore, and the Dutch in Indonesia.

I don't have anything polite to say either. I met some Ghurkas while in Iraq and they were great guys. It seems like most countries are shirking their debts to veterans so this is not overly surprising. We, and other countries, need more veterans in government to ensure those debts are honored.

Gentlemen
While this has been a lively thread, some posts have been deleted. There have been complaints regarding the thread, as such it was taken down for review by the moderating staff and a couple of posts removed. Please try to refrain from dragging this through the political mud, consider this a warning if it turn political again it will be gone, and that would be a shame as it has been an interesting topic.

The next problem we have is the Iraqi interpreters who seem to be getting 'abandoned'

As the author of this thread, I would second McMurdo's post. As a point of fact, there is a long-standing connection between "Johnny Gurkha" and the Jocks of the Scottish Regiments. The Gordons and the Royal Scots in particular were twinned with Gurkha regiments (the 2nd and 10th, to be specific) and the Gurkha pipers today wear Douglas tartan to honour the old Scottish Rifles/Cameronian Regiment.
I wish to apologise to whoever this thread offended; I would refer to you the quote from a Gurkha I posted earlier in the thread:
We are proud to support our glorious forebears and love Scotland. We play the pipes, wear the tartan and are, of course, Highlanders too! -- Capt. Rajen Gurung
Surely that sentiment would offend no one, especially a kilted gentleman who shares that love of Scotland.
As it is, the thread is moot, as the Gurkhas may have indeed won this battle. Therefore, I would ask the Mods to please close this thread.
Ayo Gurkhali!
