Perhaps the secretary knows him (or wants to know him) personally enough to ask such questions.
Then that leads into the realm of speculation... but I further speculate all people are good natured and she probably had no idea she would have five pages of discussion on a web forum.

Make that six pages of discussion. If it could be afforded for both to wear SWK Thriftys of the same tartan whilst at the Yellow M, or get a group of mates together in two different SWK thrifty tartans, about equal numbers of each. The tartan would be the team colours for a pick up football match. This should put the secretary in high gossip mode instantly. Especially if the match could be in a park in view of the same secretary.
At least my rellies have managed to avoid the white hose. Now there is my fourth cousin with the dark tweed flat cap, who will not wear a glenn or a Balmoral hat.
