I just called up Travel Country (the online merchant that I linked to before) and one of their sales reps was actually wearing the kilt so they put him on the line. The Elkommando measures 21.5" in length! ABOUT FRIGGIN' TIME! I've been getting a bit cranky with 24" standard lengths. I'm going to do a bit of hemming and hawing and then probably pull the trigger and order one. I did also confirm that the apron on the new model opens on the right.

That's great news about the pleats, apron and length. The other question I had was do they run small? My old mountain in medium just fits and I was told that they ran small and you should order the next size up. Do you know if the same applies to the Elkommando?

I have a waist that's 36-38" depending on the piece of clothing and how sloth like I've been recently. The gentleman I spoke with said that if I went with a large that I'd be fine. I know that doesn't exactly answer your question, but I think you'd be okay ordering up a bit and then using the belt to cinch it down if it's a bit big.

Right now I have on a SWK thrifty that I ordered in a large because they were out of stock on the medium. It's a bit large and Jerry told me I could add a little velcro over the pleats. I run 32-34ish waste and don't want the Elkommando to be too sloppy looking. I just wrote an email to Mountain Hardware to ask them.

Let us know what they say. I wish it came in a different color. My Utilikilt mocker is in olive and their "otter" looks very similar. VERY different kilts, I know, but a bit of variety in color would be nice.

I liked the color of the original MK. I would like to find a casual kilt in that color. But so many are much lighter.

The nylon (canyon cloth) is great too. I can't tell you how many times I've had that soaked in the rain, in lakes, poolside and in the surf. It drys quickly, not too heavy wet and holds up great. If I was stranded on a tropic island, that's the garment I'd want to wear! Mike Butler said if I can find the cloth, he'll make a kilt for me. I'm still looking. But this new Elkommando may be the answer.

Check out the fabric dollar bin at Walmart. You can often find yards of rip stop nylon in various colors. I pick up a lot of it for camping gear and hammocks. Got about 12 yards of a sharkskin grey DWR and sky blue nylon in the shop right now. Probably not as abrasion resistant but you might find a similar fabric.

One of the dealers selling Mountain Hardwear's Elkommando kilt, TravelCountry.com, offers this bit of advice:

"Though if there is one piece of advice we could offer those who wear the Mens Mountain Hardwear Elkommando Kilt, it would be this: wear underwear."

I guess they haven't given any thought to why it was called Elkommando.

Please post a review (with pics) when you get a chance. This garment is one of those things people really like the concept of, but aren't sure has quite been pulled off well enough and since most brick and mortar stores don' stock them I've never been willing to gamble on shipping
