I've heard rumblings that some traddies aren't wearing kilt pins for various reasons. Is this true? You see, sadly, I don't live around kilted folk here. I'd be interested in hearing if you generally do or do not wear a kilt pin. This has been on my mind since yesterday. I've always worn one, but that's only because it seemed like it was the thing to do.

I'm interested in your opinions, my brothers.
I always wear a kilt pin of some sort on both my tank and my tweed kilts. The pin I usually wear is a basket hilted claymore style, and as Matt said without any clan crest emblazoned on it. I also have an old blanket pin that I sometimes wear. While the kilt pin does leave a small hole in the kilt, that is quickly remidied when the pin is removed, and I've not had the trouble that someone else mentioned of getting the pin snagged.

As for me here in westcentral Illinois, I'm somewhat left to my own devices when trying to decide what is proper (ie traditional) and what is not with the wearing of the kilt as I'm just about the only frequent wearer in town. Although I have in recent weeks learnt of a couple more lads who own kilts, whom I've yet to see out and about. That's one of the great things about XMarksTheScot, lots of great advice is always waiting for me here!

I've caught the pin a couple of times already, but have so far avoided damaging the fabric. It makes sense to me to avoid any potential tears based on the price of a good, traditional kilt. Although, I think I will revert to wearing my 'blanket' pin.

I have a number of kilts pins but find I have been straying away from the sword styles lately. I often wear one with a Celtic Swirl or Serpent design, or when attending more sombre events like a funeral, I wear a horn/antler pin.

While I appreciate that they are not the definitive source on matters of tradition, I don't think you'll find a single Regiment that uses a pin of any sort.
    Are you sure about that?

    Holes-in-kilt-apron issue...

I seem to recall reading a recommendation somewhere ("So you want to wear the kilt?") that may help avoid more than one hole in the front apron. If you (or someone you know) can handsew a buttonhole stitch around a very small pair of holes in the frnt apron, it would be A) almost invisible except for a very close examination, and B) keep from putting more than one pair of holes in your kilt.

I also seem to recall the recommendation that you NOT pin the front apron to the piece behind it, which sounds like a wise idea, for the obvious reasons.

I very much like the idea about the rare earth magnets - a possible source is:

    http://www.kjmagnetics.com

They have almost any kind of magnet you can think of...

I like 'em. There are so many styles and options available. It's a great way to add a little personal flair to the outfit. I recently purchased the pin below when I visited Scotland this summer. The colored bit is Heather wood that has been stained and polished. I like to think of it as wearing a wee bit of Scotland on my kilt!

I think that this is absolutely true, with the exception being those regiments that wear kilts.
