Partly because I'm too straight laced for that type of thing and partly because the kilt would need washing less frequently if one did wear underwear.
I've never understood this line of logic. You guys wear shirts, right? And assuming your shirt is tucked into your kilt, it lies between you and your kilt. At least, in "that" area.

I never wear underwear with my kilt. And my shirt always gets tucked in, acting as underwear, at least in the sense of being the fabric that's touching my nether regions.

Most modern shirts barely have enough length in the tails to tuck them in properly.

I respect your right to wear whatever you want. I don't really understand why you wouldn't wear underwear, though. There's no rule that says you shouldn't. It in no way affects the quality of your attire. Under normal circumstances it's not visible, and if it were for some reason, I'd much rather have underwear visible than what underwear is designed to cover. It seems as if you're being contrary and, dare I say, deviant just for the hell of it.

    Sorry, that's what I think.

Edit: I like HarborSpringsPiper's response - that it's up to you what you wear under your kilt (no one will see it anyway). I do wish the kilt hadn't got a reputation for being worn without underwear, though. I would find it much easier to wear a kilt out and about. I hate being asked.

Oh - I was also going to say that I've never found underwear of the correct size to be uncomfortable. Perhaps some of you guys were buying underwear one or two sizes too small.

Maybe it depends on what size you are. I find that all shirts (even t-shirts) hang down below my buttocks. And especially shirts with tails. Maybe I just have a short torso.

I absolutely respect everyone's right to wear what they want as well. Please don't think I'm criticizing people who do choose to wear underwear. That is not my intent.

Personally, though, half of my love for kilt-wearing is the freedom associated with it. I even find boxer shorts uncomfortable when sitting. The comfort of being 'free' under my kilt is perfect. Plus, I get some air to my nether regions. Let's face it, men, that area of our anatomy can get sweaty and uncomfortable even when it's not bunched up inside underwear. The more air circulation I get on my business, the more comfortable I am. So that's my main reason for choosing not to wear underwear; not because of any silly 'rules' or customs.

I doubt that I could ever give up wearing bifurcated garments entirely - what would I wear when cycling, or with my cowboy boots? So my boxers will continue to get used, but only in combination with jeans, shorts, trousers, etc. I'm sure that there's a line in Leviticus somewhere forbidding the mixing of bifurcated and unbifurcated garments ...

    Cryptic Answers...

My favourite reply is "Nicht but a wee furrr coat!" :P (gotta role the "rrr's") I heard that one at the Atlanta Celtic festival way back in the 90's from one of the performers who was cutting up on stage with Fiona Richie. Good times...

Ok. Thanks for the replies. It must depend on what size you are. Being quite tall and lanky, I find that shirts often don't have enough length in the tails. They do tuck in ok, but they aren't a substitute for underwear.
