I can't believe how indignant and self righteous some people get over this argument. People are getting far too worked up over something that all comes down to one person's choice - If I want to put my belt or sporran strap or both through my belt loops (if I have them), that it should be my choice.
No one jumps up and down and says that cars were driven for year without power steering, heaters or inertia reel seat belts, so does that mean we shouldn't have them in modern cars? It's an insult to history?
I think we all need to lighten up, and stop telling people "You're doing it WRONG!!" when you see them wearing a kilt made our of PV or acrylic or denim or leather, and their belt is going THROUGH THE LOOPS (Oh......the humanity!), and they're wearing a flat cap (Oh, just shoot them now........put them out of their misery please!!), and they're wearing boots (Ugh, now I just feel physically sick...........).........
We wear these things because we like them and we enjoy the comfort and style ..... not because we're conforming to an 18th century costume like the ones we see so often in the pictures posted here.

Hold your horses here one second, As far as I can see no one said either way was wrong this is a poll to see what people do Personaly I dont use them but thats my preferance I dont csre what you or anyone else does unless I see you doing something obviously daft (IE pleats at the front, in which case I'll have a quiet word) then its your life.
About this 18th century sterio type I wouldnt think theres many people on these forums who would agree with you. I can only speak from my experiances but I dont think I could pass about being from any time but this one what with my boots scrunched hose and leather jacket.
And the flat cap/ white hose thing is just a little banter so lighten up
Just my opinions of course.

It appears that there are some that are saying it is wrong to use loops for a belt...

Ideally, then, loops should be small enough that a belt can't be put through them and should be reserved for a sporran strap, "

The second quote, I believe, was from his wife's book but since he included it, I assume he mirrors the sentiment. I will still use the "belt loops" for my belt and I am glad to see I am in the majority. Danwell, you wrote what I was thinking; well put.

AZWildcat is voicing his opinion as far as I can tell not saying this is right and everyone else is wrong.
Ancienne Alliance Is quoting Barb's book not his good wife's and is again only putting forth an opinion more of a traditional one this time but He is still not saying there is only one way.
I would like to advise that people stop looking for ways to be offended.
We are not in the Army! There is no right way to do anything or not wrong way, there are traditional ways and generally accepted ways however nobody will say you have to/ can't put the belt or sporran strap through the loops at the back of your kilt just as they won’t say you have to wear a Kilt pin or a Sgian or a Balmoral.
YOU choose to wear the kilt, YOU choose to use the loops or not. Some people will say they don’t like to (I’m one) some people will say they do (Hamish If I remember correctly to give an example) pick what you like and do as you please

I was voiceing my opinion...and not stating a fact or barking an order for all to adhere to. It's what I do when I wear a kilt. Everyone else is free to do what they want to. My opinion is based primarily on advice from my kilt maker. I personally put value in this advice, because he is someone I consider and expert.
I mentioned that if the loops were meant for the belt that they would be found all the way around, and not just in the back. This was more tongue-in-cheek...but the more I think about it, there may be some truth to it.

At least in Europe it is considered very bad taste when you wear trousers with belt loops without a belt. The same applies to women’s skirts. If they have belt loops women must wear a belt.
If my kilts have loops, I use them. I know the loops are intended for the sporran strap only but I simply cannot figure out why they should not be used for the belt too? I mean, they are much wider than needed for the sporran strap.
So yes, of course I use the loops for both sporran strap and belt.
To me good taste is always more important than rules.
Greg
I will wear a kilt whenever I feel like it and when appropriate.

Well, since I do not wear braces, I do wear a belt with my trousers. The cut of the trousers available to me requires it – they do not sit properly around my waist.
But bad form not to wear a belt? That I find odd.
If the trousers stay up without a belt, there’s no crime in not wearing one.

When I travel with a couple of kilts, one goes into a rolled up kilter holder. The other one or two go on skirt-hangers. For the hanging kilts, I slip the skirt-hanger into the loops to provide additional protection from slipping off the hangers. This is not a choice among the votes.
