Looks like a winner...I hope that you ordered yours before you posted and they should give you a deal since I'm sure that they'll be getting a few more orders from Xmarksers who saw the post.

Nah, I didn't order that one. I just posted it in case anybody else thought it would make a good casual jacket with a kilt. It is priced higher than I want to spend on this.
What I'll be getting is an original (vintage) Ike jacket. They can be had in the neighborhood of $30 to $80. I've got my eye on a couple of them on eBay, but I'm waiting for some sizing clarifications from the sellers before I pull the proverbial trigger.

Yay! I won this jacket on eBay. I'll be posting pics when I get it.

Nice. The listing says it comes with a hat too?

Yeah, it does come with a hat, although they didn't post pictures of it and I didn't ask. I don't really care about the hat.
The cool thing about this jacket is that it was converted to a zipper instead of buttons. At first that was a turn-off for me, as I wanted to stay with the traditional buttons. But given that the zipper is hidden, and it has snaps to close the flap over the zipper, it's not so bad. Plus, it will actually be better with a zipper in terms of keeping out the wind, or 'gapping' between the buttons.

Is there no happy medium? Surely someone out there has produced a jacket that's warm and functional for wearing with a kilt, but that looks casual and fits the style of a kilt? And doesn't cost a fortune?
Nearly forty-odd years ago I took one of my old safari-style shooting jackets, removed the bottom set of patch pockets, had the jacket cut to kilt length, then re-installed the patch pockets. It made a great casual, knocking around kind of kilt jacket. If the evenings got chilly I'd wear a jumper under the jacket.

*sigh* My Ike jacket came in yesterday, but I'm not happy with it. I had thought it would be a nice casual style jacket, but when I put it on, it just looks too "uniform-ish" and military for my tastes. It makes me look like I'm play-acting or trying to be a WWII reenactor. I just don't like the look of it for casual kilting. It's amazing how different it looks on me than I thought it would! I do like the length of it, though. That part is great. It's just the overall style that I don't care for.
Good thing I didn't pay much for it! Now I'm going to have to try to re-sell it, and probably take a loss.
Worst thing, though, is that I'm back to square one. Time to re-look at all the suggestions given here.

Sorry to hear that; I'm a big fan of the Ike jacket look, myself:

If you do decide to re-sell, I'm sure yours will find a good home.

Discovered yesterday that H&M has a couple of "blazers" the bodies of which are cut rather shorter than Saxon sportcoats but not quite as short as a kilt jacket...have to run down there tomorrow and check this out. Remember though that the absolute largest size that H&M carries is a 44R and that's sized like the usual kilt jacket: it fits like a US 42R. Fortunately, those 44's fit me perfectly...

I've tried on some of those short bodied sports coats at H&M and they look like they might work with a kilt. If you end up getting one, post pics so we can verify the hypothesis.
That being said, I don't think they would be casual enough for the OP's needs....
