Tobus.
Aha the dreaded Mk5! Kicks like a mule and suffers/ed from an incurable "wandering zero". If yours still shoots to the same point of aim after a couple hundred rounds then it is a collectors item!

I inherited a 1914 SMLE from my father-in-law earlier this year. It belonged to his grandfather, who sporterized it (removed much of the front furniture) and used it as a deer rifle. Three generations hunted with it after WWI. I've since stripped it, cleaned it, and hope to use it on a hunt some day. The only issue is that the magazine was misplaced somewhere in the past 15-20 years, and I have not been able to find a replacement.

I've heard of the wandering zero problem, but honestly I wouldn't know if mine has a wandering zero or not. The damn thing hurts my shoulder so much that I can never shoot more than a couple of rounds through it before setting it aside and shooting something else.
Seriously, I don't know what the British army was thinking on that model. It was a good idea, but that narrow hard rubber buttpad was an error in judgment. In retrospect, they should have just left the buttstock alone.
The wandering zero is usually blamed on a thinner receiver wall, as I recall.

There must be thousands of redundant SMLE magazines about----they are pretty much interchangeable. Remember that they were not meant to removed when empty and replaced with a full mag like modern rifles, they were loaded with a 5 round clip from the top---10 round capacity. If all else fails and if you really cant find one over there, try Fultons of Bisley, Surrey England ,or, Helston Guns, Helston, Cornwall, England. Failing that, give me a shout!

Jock, I have only looked a bit on-line, and at a couple local gun shows. It seems that years ago they were plentiful, but now most have seemed to dissapear into collections. I have been told that they are becoming more difficult to find in the US due to government importation restrictions on foriegn weapons. The couple I have found have been priced around $45 US, which seemed a little steep for something that was rusted, dented, and generally in poor condition. Oh well, someday I will stumble on a gem.

I love to hunt and my first name is Hunter, a double whammy!
In regards to the Lee-Enfield magazines I do WW1 and WW2 reenactments and they are getting awfully hard to find and when one does find them they run about 40-60$. Pro-Mag however is making a reproduction that works fairly well. There is another company (whos name fails my memory) that makes another reproduction but they are beyond sub standard in quality and don't function worth a darn. Its too bad some one sporterized your gun.
I think Sportsmans Guide is carrying them right now.
Just checked yup they are! Good price too.

It flies, it dies. I tend to actually avoid overseasoning-I do enjoy the "gamey" taste of things. Also, BAKING BAGS are my friends...
Deer hunter too, Missouri and Illinois, and it gets cooked and eaten like steak or regular beef-there is no sauce in my hut...
90% muzzleloader, 8% modern shotgun (danged if you can't shoot steel from a older smoothie), 2% Jeep (yes, I have-don't laugh).
