Considering that leather aprons used by Blacksmiths go back along ways in time, I'd be surprised to find that they weren't used by anyone who would have also been wearing a kilt.
Having worked in a large, eastern museum system, I know that their use goes back well into the early 1700's here in the states. And I wouldn't be surprised if the custom was brought over here before that. As such, why wouldn't using a leather apron over a kilt be just as historically authentic wear for a kilted Blacksmith ?
And anyone who's ever done forge welding,.... even just once,.. would understand why leather aprons were invented !!!! ![Very Happy](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

I think the original Utilikilt Workman model would be a good choice to consider for such a task. The material would be appropriate and the utilitarian style of the like would meet function needs.

I would say a very heavy wool (should be enough to resist a stray spark)
or like some previous posters mentioned, a leather material.
I would not consider an asbestos kilt....lol!
