A Good Choice for Old Guys, Too

I wholeheartedly agree with your comparison. GD is smoother than Jack. If others don't believe it, ask someone to blind test you. The difference is dram - atic. ;-)
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Situational Palate
[QUOTE=beloitpiper;976695]Ice will coagulate oils and esters in the whisky and literally change the flavor of the drink. Also, ice numbs your taste buds--basically puts them to sleep--so that you have less response to flavor.
Greg: Ice/water certainly does change the flavor of at least some whiskies. To me adding water to any Oban, Clynelish, Ben Riach, Edradour, et. al. makes them taste like soapy water. :-( On the other hand ice improves the flavor (to me, anyway) of some malts and thus I prefer them over rocks.

I took an instance liking to Jack Daniels in College. I didn’t overdo it, mostly because two would put me to sleep (not exactly a party animal at 155 pounds). But I definitely preferred JD to beer. When I got older I tried a few single malts but they always tasted thin and antiseptic to me and I would go back to the trusty Jack Daniels.
About six years ago my wife and I set out to explore the world of single malts and after many marginally acceptable to disappointing bottles we finally discovered one we liked. So I would have no problem with Jock’s house selection, neat with just the tiniest almost invisible sliver of ice to release the flavors. For a US original it is still JD neat or over ice (you can keep the Coke, thank you very much).
Although this is all academic because I haven’t had a drink in over four years. One shot (or wee dram) of either would probably put me to sleep.

The question did not specify whether "whisky" was being limited to the Scottish realm... Or even further, whether the definition would only encompass those whiskies that use the Scottish English spelling of whisky rather than the Hiberno-English whiskey.
CNDSushi, you have thoroughly grasped the nuances of the question and I thank you for your perspicuity. On the issue of whisky vs. whiskey, I tried to ask an open ended OP question by phrasing it as one whisk(e)y, no matter what its origins might be...

There can be only one...
I just realized I never answered the question I asked in the OP!
If I could pick only one for all time, it would have to be Lagavulin 16 year. The heavy peatiness suits my palate now and could still do the trick were I to live long enough to be in Jock's situation.

At the moment I'd go with Cardhu 12 year old, a super (and affordable!) Speyside single-malt....

I would have to say the Jura Origin. Perhaps not the most sophisticated choice; maybe not even my favourite and there are certainly others I would prefer in different situations but if there was only one then it would have to be Jura Origin: I soon as I smell it it just conjures up happy memories of tramping round Seil, getting in before the midges come out and spending evenings sipping my way through the decanter with a good book. It is a great "anytime" whisky by which I mean that it can be enjoyed in the early evening where a headier whisky would be too much and it's still got a good enough flavour to be enjoyed after a bowlful of late evening pipe.

My father was a good friend of Popcorn Sutton. Every time I went up to visit I'd make sure a couple quart jars of Popcorn's "Kurn Likker" came back with me.
The week my father died, was the same week Popcorn was pinched for the last time. When Popcorn made bail, he decided to go out on his own terms. Rumor has it, his tombstone reads "Popcorn said f*** you".
Man could make a fine, fine whiskey.
