Well, Yes, I think it's a hideously over engineered monstrosity, but then I am biaised as I live within 10 yards of a traditional old lock gate, much gentler on the eye, kinder to the landscape, a thing such as that in this part of the country would look totally out of place and not be welcomed, but then we do have the benefit of countless hill lochs to supply a steady flow to the canal.

A thank you.
Dear Chrisupyonder.
Thank you so much for your your brilliant pics! It takes me right back to when we lived in Scotland, and the weekend jaunts we used to take in our wee motor to most of those places you have so kindly shown us.The cosy bakeries, the bridies and empire buiscits, the pints of cider and lager in the wee pubs, the steak pie suppers, the views and the ever changing skies and sceneries. So many great memories and your photos bring it all rushing back.Grand to see you out and about enjoying wearing the kilt,by the way.Thank you for taking the time Chris!Still would love to be back there.

You did mention it but it was the tour guide on the boat at the wheel that also mentioned it and gave us the reason why they could not re-instate the original lochs. Some had been filled in and built over.

Blair Atholl Watermill
This is still a working watermill for making flour etc. which they sell in the shop and cafe in their home baked bread and cakes.

This may be the last for a week or two as we are moving to a site near Montrose so don't know yet if they have wi-fi access.

Auchindrain
1 more set.
We met Redshank in Inveraray yesterday and he suggested we go look at Auchindrain as a contrast to the rich in the castles.

Dunnottar Castle
Finally got round to the last few pictures.
Dunnottar Castle just south of Stonehaven on the east coast.
William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots, the Marquis of Montrose and the future King Charles II, all graced the Castle with their presence. Most famously though, it was at Dunnottar Castle that a small garrison held out against the might of Cromwell’s army for eight months and saved the Scottish Crown Jewels, the ‘Honours of Scotland’, from destruction. Crown, sceptre and sword now take pride of place in Edinburgh Castle.
A darker chapter in the history of Dunnottar is that of the ‘Whig’s Vault’. The gruesome story of the imprisonment in 1685 of a group of Covenanters who refused to acknowledge the King’s supremacy in spiritual matters.
The Castle was the home of the Earls Marischal once one of the most powerful families in the land. The last Earl was convicted of treason for his part in the Jacobite rising of 1715, and as a result his estates, including Dunnottar, were seized by the government.
The buildings were thereafter much neglected until 1925 when the 1st Viscountess Cowdray embarked on a systematic repair of the Castle. The Castle was officially made open to visitors thereafter.

Glamis Castle

Tay Road Bridge

Looking towards Bonar Bridge

And finally home to a nice sunset over Dunnet Head.

Hope you all enjoyed this trip around the Highlands with us. We had a great time and the weather stayed nice. In all we were away from home for nearly 6 weeks. Now to plan next years tour.
