Farmers can most certainly work both sides of the border and I personally know some who do. Because of the quite separate and distinctive legal systems, however, this is not an option for the legal profession. For them it is one or the other.

Hear hear Saxonpipes.
I don't really believe that Jock can not understand the concept of which you speak. He is an educated and intelligent man.But he is also a canny man,and although I do believe that he had a fun evening, and that it was good of him to share it with us,and that he meant it as a pleasant diversion for members to enjoy,I don't for a moment think that he was unaware of some of the reactions that sharing it may engender.
As I posted earlier, when I put forward an example of how Scottish sence of identity can be passed to those without Scotland,I did not really think that it would bring any indication of agreement from him.(Jock not meaning to be rude mentiong you like you're not reading this, just tacking on the end of Saxonpipes comment and it's flowed on)
I have my own theory on why Jock maintains this view.Of course as a theory,it could be wrong! But part of it involves something that is akin to a bursting dam.Part of my theory has actually just been proven by,Jock, your most interesting post on your young experiences to lowland reactions to you being kilted. And what was proven would not,I'd wager,be guessed by most members reading this.
On that topic,to both Jock and Phil, please don't think that all,non Scottish or non Brittish forum members did not pick up on what Phil called the nuances of one of Jocks earlier posts.Sometimes there may be an outsider who is not as much an outsider as you think, that has the ability to see both sides pretty clearly. Not always so easy to do when you are on one of the sides yourself.
You know,Jock,in the past I got angry at something you said, but you,one of the foremost members here, took the trouble to seek me out,a new member, in a P M for the sake of saying that you ment to offend no one. That to me is class.
You're dead on Phil, there are members here that pretty well fawn on Jock, which I think is an American thing(generalizing, don't take mass offence)
Jock, even though I don't agree with all you say,I've come to think that you were right when well early in the peace, you told me to look more carefully at what you say, that I'd see we agree on much.
I have,and we do.

Quite correct on the legal systams Phil. Nevertheless, there you go, Phil, splitting hairs again and whilst doing so, drawing the wrong conclusions. Why be so grudging? The Judge is trained in English law and sits in the North of England whilst having a Scots home, the same goes for one Barrister and the other fellow , now retired back to his home in the Highlands practiced not too far from where I think you live. Come Phil lighten up!

Not quite correct - it is possible to requalify.

Of course - but do you know any who have taken the trouble?

Just an observation on this conversation (and a point of clarification directed at Jock-without wanting to be too pedantic) but there are no Barristers in the Scots legal profession. The senior branch (of the legal profession in Scotland) are Advocates.

No, you are quite right to point that out and thank you for doing so.
