Since we have heard from those who don't like fly plaids, at all, under any circumstances, period, here's the other side. I like the look of a fly plaid, especially if it's pinned to the jacket with a real brooch; not a cheap plastic trinkety thing that you bought at the end of the day from a vendor at the Games, but a real, metal, honest-to-goodness brooch. If the edges of the plaid are purled, so much the better. It does take a bit of getting used to, balancing the weight of the fabric which makes your jacket pull up on the side you pin the plaid to. It can be helpful if a nearby lady has cold shoulders and you can offer her a wrap; she might give you the cold shoulder if you don't. And, finally, it's for an event at the Smithsonian. It's a place known for showcasing all kinds of stuff, not just the stuff that somebody else says is alright to display. If you wan to pin on a plaid, then go right ahead, hold your head up high and be proud of it. If you discover that it's more trouble than it's worth, take it off and stow it somewhere. And take pictures.

They are a pain... but I do like them. I'd never wear one though, unless I was the guest of honour, bridegroom, speaker... etc.
