    My Wife's Response

    This is Andrea's response:

    1. When I'm with my husband/boyfriend while he wears a kilt in public,
--I used to be quite embarrassed (mortified, actually) but now I'm used to it. It helped most people don't seem to notice or care. I wouldn't say proud, exactly. To me it's just part of who he is. It's what he wears. Should I be proud if he changed his mind and decided God wanted him to wear trousers again? It's a garment, what's to be proud about? Excitement (as in ooh boy my new King Kilt arrived!) I understand, but proud?

    2. I believe that it's appropriate for men to wear kilts in public,
    a. never
    b. on special occasions only.
xc. when ever they feel like it. --never used to have an opinion, then my husband decided to switch to kilts permanently. so I've just had to warm up to the idea.
    d. all the time.

    3. The modern style of plain fabric kilts are just as attractive as traditional tartan kilts. Yes. / No.
--they look more like skirts, of course, but nonplaid kilts are okay. If it makes him happy.

    4. I worry sometimes what family and friends think about my husband/boyfriend wearing a kilt. Yes. / No.
Of course, but they'll just have to get over it.

    5. I would be happier if my husband/boyfriend wore a kilt,
    a. never again.
    b. less often.
    c. the same.
    d. more often.
    e. all of the time. he already does wear it all the time. and its my opinion it's not my job to dress him, although my father in law seems to think it is.

    6. I believe that it is important to have a scottish connection for a man to wear a kilt. Yes. / No.
--it's nice if you're wearing a family kilt to actually have a connection to it, but other than that, it doesn't really matter. There are plenty of kilt options for people w/o the heritage.

    7. I think that men look "sexy" in a kilt. Yes. / No.
LOL. Adam does when I kilt lift him ;)

    8. In the modern world, a kilt,
    a. should be worn by men only.
    b. is really a unisex garment.
It's a men's garment. Women who wear them are cross-dressing. My company, King Kilts, does make a "Hostess" kilt that's designed for women, but that was mainly one of my solutions to trying to prevent having to deal w/ women ordering the men's kilts. Since I don't charge extra for the girl's kilts, it really doesn't make financial sense--especially if she orders a kilt for hubby, too.

    9. When my husband/boyfriend bought his first kilt,
    a. I was concerned about his mental health.
    b. I couldn't understand why.
    b. I wondered about his sexual orientation.
    c. I thought it was ok... just his way of getting attention.
    d. I liked the idea and thought it was fun.

I understood why--He told me quite plainly his reasons. I was more "OH my gosh, what will people think" then I remembered we're grown adults and it doesn't really matter what other ppl think--except maybe your boss and the police, but neither seem to care much in his case.

    10. I would be just as happy if my husband stuck to trousers. Yes. / No.
Mmm.Probably, but he wouldn't be, and that's what matters to me. Although, I must say he looks better in a kilt and he has yet to bring me a kilt with the bottom split out (even once let alone the same kilt for the third time in a row) begging me to pretty pretty please sew it back up (only to split it out again and repeat the process a week later) and that I wouldn't trade for all the pants in the world. So, come to think of it, I probably wouldn't be just as happy!

How's the election campaign going, Elijah... was just curious if you were getting any reaction to your kilts.

In terms of reaction, Blu. There's been very little on the campaign trail. Most have been questions about Scottish heritage. Believe it or not, people are far more concerned about where their tax money is going than what I'm wearing.

I have made some people nervous going through the neighborhood. One day, I entered a neighborhood in a poor precinct. Rather than a "Welcome" mat it had a mat that said, "Go Away". The neighborhood was incredibly unfriendly. I got people barely cracking the door and people telling me to just leave my literature and go away.

Finally, as I was walking down the street, a police car pulled up near me. The officer asked me what I was doing and I explained. He took a look at my campaign literature and was reading it. He seemed to half forget he was there to do a job.

He then said that the reason people had been so unfriendly is that they were used to people knocking on the door and if there was no answer, coming in and robbing the place. He advised me just to announce my reason for being there clearly to a door closed in my face (believe it or not, that actually worked a few doors down.)

He joked that I was very hard to find because the description was of a "large man in a red kilt".

At another house, some lady asked me about the "costume." And commented when I told her when I worked for a bank that it must not be a "big bank, otherwise you wouldn't be wearing that costume." She would have really ticked off Bear, since I was wearing a Bear Kilt that day. I can just imagine what Bear would have said but candidates must have more tact.

At still another house, some guy said that I should go next door because the guy across the street wore skirts too. I said, "I don't know what he's wearing, I'm running for the State House. Here's my literature. If you have any questions, contact me. My phone number and e-mail address are on the back."

He took the literature and I never found out whether the guy across the street was freestyler or Braveheart, as he wasn't home.

Another person, when I knocked on their door and handed him the literature, he said, "Is that a kilt?" I responded that it was. He asked me if I believed in God and I said I did. He then told me he'd vote for me.

A lady opened the door and saw me. She commented that she thought kilts were cool and had a friend in Seattle who wore kilts all the time.

Finally, one lady said she thought kilts were cool and was wondering where I bought mine. I told them about King Kilts. (Home of the $67 Black Watch kilt.

At most houses, it really gets little or no reaction. I've been to nearly 500 houses and it's been a great experience. I feel like I'm growing more confident each day.

That's what called a conflict of interest. Less tax loopholes not more.

Also, thanks, Graham. That means a lot coming from you. God bless you all.

    Derek,

Having met Elaine, I was sure you would get that sort of positive response from her. I will have to speak to her about the "UNISEX" bit though, the next time we meet. I hope that will be soon, now that the weather is getting warmer.

    Cheers,

    Rob
