I've always said that when it comes to affordable, well-made outer wear, Uncle Sam is hard to beat, and it is certainly also true of the military surplus of The Mother Bear (and many other nations) which I became aware of when I started collecting vintage Russian wrist watches. I'm sure your father-in-law could easily source one of the capes for you. Highly recommended.
The Russian Army Officer's Capes in greenish-tan--which I've actually seen in stores here in the Chicago area in the past (they also use to be available from the now-defunct Sovietski mail order catalog company)--are not quite as elegant looking as the Navy version, but they're identical in construction and details. The navy one looks the best but I think I prefer my stockmans coat. Thanks for the links. I have added the Navy one to my watch list, but I'll need to see if there are any on the uk site.
