I was SORE on Sunday night, and my quads and hamstrings were jumpin'. That means we worked hard!

I've been off the field for the last couple of days with a cold. Feeling better today so I'll do something this afternoon - haven't yet decided what - and then R&R in anticipation of Saturday.

Light work in the gym yesterday evening. I'm still fighting off the cold but I'm feeling better each day. However, I'm low on energy and the session yesterday left me more gassed than normal. Nonetheless, I should be fine for Ardenwood in a couple of days. And even if I'm a few quarts low, when I hear my name called, I will step up and throw.
That's the way it works.

We threw some WOB last night. I just threw once, I wanted to rest. You and Don Courson will have a good comp. He's got 10, squeaked it over 10' 6", hit the bar or just under at 11. With some adrenalin he *might* get 11. His B stone is about 20-21..O stone about 28. 16 hammer is about 60 feet.

Ardenwood on Saturday was a great time: beautiful day, good crowd, and well and smoothly run by Alan H. Plus a good group of throwers to hang with all day.
For myself, I experienced the thrill of the PR in two events and the agony of totally sucking on weight for distance. Hammers, wob, caber all good. Stones - meh; Braemar okay for now, Open Stone not acceptable-more work required on footwork and form.
Weight for distance I fouled 5 of six throws, something that has never happened before. In general, I rarely foul. However, with all the lost training time over the past couple of months due to stupid injuries, the hardest hit was wfd. I felt like my feet were foreign objects with independent minds of their own because they sure didn't do what I wanted them to do. Wfd is the most technical of the events and, clearly, the quickest to go south due to inactivity. Going into Woodland this weekend Tuesday and Wednesday are going to drilling days for wfd. If I don't harness the dogs quickly, they'll be out in the fields chasing birds.
Nonetheless, two PRs, heavy hammer and caber, make this game great by definition.
And I'll take it.

I knew you were going to knock that caber over on the third toss. The second one was SO close! At 17' 4", that's the Real Deal even if it is a bit light. VERY nice!
We ALL stunk up weights pretty badly. I know that I did. You just led the overall charge in the stinko department.

Shaffer Park last night, wfd only, both heavy and light. Balance is off and feet aren't going where they should. Slowed everything down and hit a few acceptable attempts toward the end. I'll do it again tonight, plus some hammer winds and maybe a few wob tosses. After that it's easy into Woodland.

Easy throwing last night at Shaffer Park - hammer winds and footwork drilling with the 14lb wfd. Tonight I'll meet Gman to watch him do whatever he's going to do and I'll get in some stretching and other light work.

Woodland. Really enjoyable weekend. I drove over on Friday afternoon, met my son and went out to dinner at our favorite bbq joint on Main Street. And Main Street in Woodland is like stepping back into the '50s small ag-based town that, based on appearances, was hit fairly hard by the economy going south. Nonetheless, it's a good place to spend a weekend. Oh, and Ludy's Main Street BBQ is the place to go.
Gman threw on Saturday with the lightweights and did okay considering his training time has been compromised by work, school, and a new girlfriend. However, he did pull out a PR in lwfd.
Sunday I was in the 60+ group. For the first serious game of the season, I'm happy with the results. Two PRs - hwfd and lwfd -that have been a long time coming and the breakthrough has finally happened; I look forward to longer throws in these events very soon. Wob felt really good and I hit the bar at 12 three times hard; I just need a little more to move up in that event. Hammers were okay, but I didn't feel completely comfortable and still need more practice time using blades. Stones need more work, not satisfied. Sheaf sucked but I never practice that so no real expectations. Turned the caber twice, 17' long but a bit light.
Perfect weather on Sunday, nice crowd, a great event.
Bonus: I had a close-up view as Alan H hit a 14 on wob that looked easy-peasy.
(but it's not)

Out to Shaffer Park yesterday after work with Gman. It's been one of those weeks where the purpose of throwing on Friday afternoon was therapy, everything else was secondary.
We worked stones, specifically open stone form - footwork and positioning for delivery - using a 12lb shot instead of a stone. After Woodland I need to really spend some time ironing out form issues that are limiting my distances. we both did drills and focused reps. My footwork in general is ok in that I know where they are going to be placed without really thinking about it. The problem is with my upper body, separation, and transfering power from my leg push and hip drive, through my shoulders and arm to the stone. We took some video and spotted a couple of things. To be honest, I spotted the obvious problems; Gman pointed out the more subtle issues along with a practical suggestion to correct one particular problem. Anyone who knows Gman will not be surprised by his perceptive analysis of my form defects. In any event I've got a clear idea of what I need to do during the next few stone sessions.
After an hour of this, Gman left and I did hammer winds, many reps. Then I just sat for awhile and soaked up the peace and quiet that characterizes Shaffer Park. That I have access to this park for training, most of the time all to myself, never ceases to amaze me. Alan H can so testify.
