I was very very nervous about telling my wife about the kilt. Didn't know what to expect. But she's fine with it and likes it and encourages me to wear it. A bit surprised though. Still mustnt grumble

I saw the video clip on the Utilikilts site.

If wearing a kilt made me like like Mario in a kilt, I would have started years ago.

Well, my Black Watch from Stillwater Kilts arrived the other day and I put it on. My wife and I had just come back from a drive of several hours in the rain after a long day where we endured various of my family friends chattering at us no end. She was tired, to put it simply. I put on the kilt and a jacobean shirt I'd bought at a recent Ren Faire. She knew I'd orderd the kilt, I'd even asked for contributions towards it on my family Christmas list. She's seen a few pictures and I've been talking about it for two months, so she had a notion of the whole thing. She's an educated woman, though not particularly into celtic stuff, kilts or anyting else. Supremely sensible, that's my lady. Anyway, she knows kilts are mens garments.

The response, when she finally saw it? NOT good. VERY negative... "it's not flattering to your body type and it looks effeminate." Also.."nobody can wear a plaid skirt and look good." It was a difficult couple of hours. I tok it off, and put it away.

However, we just talked about it and I told her that I was planning on wearing the thing like this...

1.) To occasional meetings of my sailing association. I belong to a group of men and women who like to do long-distance sail racing, solo, so we're all a bit unconventional. There are two "MacFarlanes" in the association, and we've gotten to be pretty good friends with one of them. He and I have "talked kilts" at dinner with my wife and his girlfriend (he wants to get married in a kilt, she's accepting but clearly not red-hot on the idea) so I know a couple one or two guys at the sailing group will dig it.

2.) To work, very occasionally. I've told a couple of people at work about the kilt and they're all pretty supportive of it. They know it's coming.

3.) To Ren Faires, Highland Games and celtic music events. I go to a lot of celtic music events, so that's a non-issue. Also, I'll be giving a couple of concerts with an Irish band...crossover of Celtic and Jazz in the next few months, so I'll wear it to those events.

Anyway, my wife's response is currently "I don't think it looks good, but that's no reason for you to not wear it. You should do what you want." She still hates the shirt, but that's OK since I'm just going to wear the shirt to Ren Faires. I can't complain about that! I'm not considering making the complete transition 24/7 from pants to kilt, I just think that having the option to wear a kilt when I feel like it is a good one, and good fun, too. It seems like she can deal with that.
