I've been getting away with wearing either a t-shirt or a hoody sweater with a kilt practically everyday. It works fine.

I'm with Kilt Sgt,
I really like the lightweight fishing shirts from Orvis, Columbia, etc. They look nice with a kilt.
They come in a lot of colors, depending on the manufacturer. You can often find them on sale off season.
And they have long tails to help keep your kilt clean when its hot out and you might be sweating some.

There!
I went to the store and bought two hawaiian shirts to go with my kakhi kilt. One is blue with white flowers, and the other one is white with blue flowers. I don't look so good in orange... The white with blue flower shirt is quite nice and I will wear it over a blue t-shirt: open of course.
On the other hand, I ended up with a very good basic white shirt with button down collar. I also found a nicer white shirt with french cuffs.
Then I found two sweater vests. Navy blue with tan, and a brown/green/tan to go with my Weathered Lamont tartan.
All of that was at the Good Will store on sale for half off... Very very frugal...

On the same ideas...
I am new to the kilted community, though I have long been proud of my Scottish/Irish heritage. My brother is getting married soon and he will be wearing the full garb. It's a beach wedding, so the rest of us guys are going for a more dressed-down look. I was kinda thinking of wearing a jacobite style shirt with my Heritage of Ireland kilt, but I'm a bit torn when it comes to footwear. Since it's on the beach, I'm kinda leaning towards some type of sandals. Does anyone have any suggestions (on the shoes or the shirt)?

* I'm not sure I fully understand the situation , so I'm not sure what advice, other than try not to stick out too much, would be good. I mean if the other people at the wedding are wearing sandals and casual clothing, then it would probably be ok. I have a pear of black leather slide sandals that look casual dressy.
Some of my friends and some family members have had casual weddings kind of like that, but I'm not sure what the expected dress type would be at the wedding you're going to.

Henley's work great with the kilt, as do polo's and regular button up shirts.
T-shirts work, too.
Some great ones can be found at WickedJester.
Just bought several (Thank a Soldier, Don't Judge, My path and Small Minds).

Just can't abide a T-shirt and kilt.
I don't expect others to live by my personal beliefs, but it somehow just doesn't seem right.
Slainte yall,

Other than the canvas BZKs, I really don't wear the t-shirts with kilts either. I think I have one picture wearing a shirt with a band name along with a tartan kilt and that was to show to another member who likes that band.
I think the open collar polo type shirts are fine for casual. I really haven't been wearing kilts too often...
