Trouble with the plastic one is that what security at one airport might pass as OK does not guarantee that you will get the same reaction at all airports.
As it's not an essential item to wear on a plane in any case I would always err on the side of caution knowing that at least I would get to keep it for wearing in future rather than seeing it confiscated.
My friend Andrew forgot to pack his kilt pin when we were flying back from Edinburgh Airport but was allowed through - very lucky in my opinion as most places would have confiscated it.
I was lucky too in June - unknowingly my real sgian was in my kilt jacket pocket which I took off to put through the machine at Cardiff and retrieved when I had gone through the portal. I did not discover this until I had arrived in Barcelona! I was lucky not to have lost it but also perturbed that this was not picked up at Cardiff Security as I wore the jacket on the plane and was therefore potentially an armed threat even though I was not aware of it until afterwards! Makes you wonder how much of a lottery it can be as to what gets through! I made sure it was in my hold luggage for my return flight!

You know, for some reason I never gave the kilt pin much thought
Thanks for the reminder

Goto jetcareers.com forums to find out how little security we really have. The pilots have one story after another about how all this TSA stuff is just an illusion and sometimes actually can put passengers at risk!

Despite all the "stories" on the internet, there have been how many hijackings? NONE. I thought so. And how many arrests? Well, we'll never know. But, having been on a commercial airliner that had a small fire, deliberately set by a passenger, (entire passenger cabin filled with smoke so thick you couldn't see three feet in under a minute) prior to implementing the current security "nonsense", I'd have to say from first hand experience that the inconvenience out weights the potential consequences of returning to the easy days of pre 9/11.

Kilts, gentlemen...let's try to relate the thread to the subject of kilts and security to keep things on-topic, else the thread will be off to the penalty box.

My wife and Ihave returned from our trip to Germany. She had fractured her ankle and was wearing a plastic boot. Even though we were escorted thru security by airport employees, she had to remove the boot each time we went thru. Its lot of fun carrying two carry ons, my shoes and trying to remove my belt and then collecting everything at the end. I am going to get a nylon belt and buckle for flying. I have never flown in a kilt, I wonder if it would be easier. BTW.....she is healed up now and the boot is in storage for the next time we fly. The boot got us golf cart rides thru each airport.

The kilt pin seemed not to have been an issue. Think what harm could be done with a bic pen or a sharp pencil. They don't take these from you - yet !

Or your shoestrings, a simple pocket comb, an average sized key ring (5-6 keys) on a lanyard - or even a single large car key! Just about anything can be turned into a weapon if you really wanted to. People can be devilishly clever when they perceive a need.
I can see it now, in the future there will be no carry-ons at all, and all passengers will have to change into hospital gowns (talk about a kilt check! ) or scrubs with those little booties and have their street clothes hermetically sealed and tagged by security before boarding.
J/k, but there probably are some in the security arena who would go that far if they had their way.
