Isn't that the truth.
There are several examples in this thread that are exactly the reason I quit scouting at age 12.

And there are some examples in this thread that make me glad I dropped out in Cub Scouts.
In all seriousness, not going on to the BSA and obtaining my Eagle Scout will always be a bit of a nagging regret for me, but at the same time, I wonder how much I would have enjoyed the organisation, being a bit of anachronism that rather enjoys uniforms, regalia and all that? I would have been one of those Scouts who wore the campaign hat with enthusiasm, since it is the symbol of Scouting (or was at one time) in the US and the World.
I fear that those of us who do appreciate such things will be once again unfairly generalized as the "uniform police".
Regards,
Todd

Hmmm, that sounds like why I took up piping and joined a pipe band in my teens!
I have no dog in the BSA/uniform fight.

Well played.
I really don't have a dog in the fight either, except that I enjoy reading about the history of the Scouting movement and its connections to Lord B-P and the Legion of Frontiersmen.

Me too, although I hung in there till 16 or 17, I bailed when the troop I was in got new leadership that started spending half the meetings steering mundane topics towards religion or outright prosthelytizing.
Disclaimer;
I know scouting is a 'faith based group' but that was never the focus of the groups I was in until the last couple of years. I didn't quit just because of that, I could have tried another troop etc... But at 16 I got my drivers license and wheels, and just developed other interests.

I got as high as a Life Scout, then we moved to another state.. We never were considered the best dressed by no means, but we had fun.. I rafter the Colorado a couple times, ran amuck in the mountains in California.. And we had fun.. Once we moved to Texas.. I never continued Scouting... No regrets, and I learned a lot about my limitations, and inner strength... Where I am now, I pass by the National Headquarters, and see the complex it sits, and think about how grand it seems, compared to the humble groups I participated in.

Well I have a dog in this fight, since I was a Scout until about age 17, got my Eagle and I'm still proud of it. Scouts taught me a passionate love of the outdoors, and for that, especially, I am grateful.
However, my dog is staying on his leash. I'll let other people fight this one out and keep my opinions to myself.

Todd, what is the connection between the Scout movement and the Legion of Frontiersmen?

See Robert MacDonald's Sons of the Empire : the frontier and the Boy Scout movement, 1890-1918 (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1993).
The basic premise was that both the Legion and the Scouts were paramilitary organisations started after the Boer War to provide intelligence and other auxillary services to Crown Forces. More to follow...

Hi the rabble,
I would offer the suggestion that for those that have an issue with the kilt being worn in BSA join an explorer post. that is still a part of the BSA organization. But one that has the ability to determine their own uniform. There are a number of explorer posts that do have the Kilt as a uniform.
Cheers,
Jeremy

Kilts are not a part of the BSA uniform for the Standered Boy Scouts, they can be a part for BSA Explorer posts. Whether or no any one agrees with it that is the uniform policy for BSA.
Cheers,
Jeremy
