Don't want to drag you down the path here but I'm guessing no sgians dubh at the Tokyo Highland Games?

Not at all. As long as we stay away from topics involving the RIGHT to have a pocket knife...

Anyway, I just went through my 2008 and 2009 Tokyo Highland Games photos, and you're right -- I didn't see ANY sgians in any of the photos. There may have been some, but the safe money is on not having one.

Wow! Maybe I have it all wrong. When I go to a ren faire I portray a fifthteenth century scottish warrior (see my avitar) and even wear authentic shoes and carry period arms. Folks seem to enjoy it and many have their picture taken with me. My wife puts on her barmaids garb and get the same treatment. At highland games, if I am attending to business at my clan tent I dress appropreately in my tartan, jacket ect. if not I might play my character and have a good time with that.

According to the many "experts" on this forum I must be a clown, egotistal, self-centered, or some other kind of nut. I am none of the above. I just enjoy myself.

And I'm NOT taking a sgian dubh to Mexico...U.S. Consulate warns against taking even a pocket knife - a serious violation of Mexican law.

Gotta respect another country's laws - or pay the price. Basic tourist advice.

In my experience in the USA Scots and Scots-Irish have interrelated and perhaps for reason, strong senses of privacy, shyness, and suspicion. It is what it is.
