Re: Scottish Movies ?
I've seen several references to Youtube, and if you haven't watched this one, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDMzHlkB-Yg . Shows a small Belgian boy, in a kilt, watching returning soldiers. It'll put a lump in your throut.

Re: Scottish Movies ?
Enlightening review of Braveheart.
"Seemingly intended as a piece of anti-English propaganda, Braveheart offers an even greater insult to Scotland by making a total pig's ear of its heritage"
von Tunzelmann also reviews Mrs Brown, Rob Roy and many other films with and without tartan in shot.

Re: Scottish Movies ?
Best animation of a kilt I've seen so far, in the animated movie ''The Illusionist''.
Not a story about kilts, but still...

I'm not a particular fan of Braveheart b/c it's an ego trip for Gibson. But, it's a movie, not a documentary. Being critical of it for being historically inaccurate is ridiculous. It's purpose is to entertain, not to educate. Anybody want to measure the accuracy of Shakespeare's MacBeth?!

I would agree that entertainment can't be judged as history - 300 and Inglorious Basterds come to mind, but these two movies don't pretend to be historically accurate. Without any historical pretense, Braveheart could have been a perfectly acceptable swords and barbarians movie in the style of Thirteenth Warrior or Conan. Instead it screws up history enough to fall in with the likes of U-571.
But horses for courses.

What historical pretense? That would only have occurred if Gibson had sold Braveheart as a documentary. The Cromwell productions do more to screw up history b/c those are disguised as documentaries and sell the same sort of crap as fact.

You'd be surprised how many people I've met over the years take Hollywood historical movies for "gospel". I'm still fighting "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman", "Dances With Wolves" and "The Patriot" in my classes.
A buddy of mine who worked at Ft. Smith National Historic Site has a whole bunch of stories about "True Grit" (the John Wayne version) and actually created interpretive programs that discussed what it got right and wrong. So, in one sense, perhaps it's good Hollywood screws things up (Western Arkansas and Oklahoma look nothing like the Rocky Mountains!) so history instructors and park rangers will have something to lecture against. ![Rofl](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/rofl.gif)
Of course, there are great films out there that can entertain AND educate. They're not mutually exclusive.
