I picked up a bottle of Caol Ila today...it's been years since I've had it. Almost bought the 18 Laphr, but the price is still a little steep. Any thoughts on it?

Caol Ila is one of my favourite Islay malts, light and smokey. I try to always have a bottle of 12 YO on my bar and would love to get an 18 YO. The problem in Ontario is the government dictates what is sold in the liquor stores and the 12 YO is usually only released once a year and sells out quickly. On a recent trip to Michigan I picked up a 1 liter bottle at the duty free so I'm set for a while. int:

I realize that this is mostly a thread about scotch, but lately I have been exploring rye whiskey and the current bottle of choice is 1776 Rye, which proved hard to get at the local liquor store.

I just plucked two more bottles of Extremely Rare Glenmorangie 18 years from my local distributor who had them on the shelf for well over a year, and who cut me a deal to move them. The two bottles together cost lest than my first bottle I bought at the duty free in Heathrow two years ago, so now I will feel more comfortable partaking of a dram or two more frequently knowing that my "vault" carries spares. If anybody else tastes it and thinks there is a dark chocolate flavor to it let me know, so I can feel better about not hallucinating that particular flavor.

Glenmorangie has a new premium bottling called Ealanta which is rather hard to come by on this side of the pond. If any of my UK brethren come across it shout out a report of its flavor and worthiness of joining the "collection". Anybody THIS side of the pond who comes across a decent deal for it give a shout out and we will see what kind of deal we might formulate for me to get my hands on some.

At the moment, the whisky is White Horse blend. I was tempted to replace it with aquavit in memory of Leif Erikson, but after checking the wallet, I decided against that replacement.

D&M claims to have the Ealanta variant for $115. See ...

They are a reputable, if a bit pricey, dealer. If you get a bottle, let us know how you like it.

K&L (also reputable, and which is usually more moderate in its pricing, is advertising it for $116. See ...

Last night, while watching the FSU-Miami game, I started with a dram of Laphroaig 15 on the rocks - enough sweetness to counter the peat, and enough ice to dilute it.

Then switched to a couple of neat drams of Balvenie 15 "Single Barrel" - exquisite!

All in all a pleasant evening.
