Glassman, I would respectfully disagree with you on wearing tartan trews, only because I think they look horrible.
I would not agree with legal action either.
I would try to reason with them as I mentioned before, if that is unacceptable, then you have two choices - depending on how much you want the job.
They would not win my best effort at work, I know that!!

First of all thanks for all your replies!
It is not about my own home but about my presence in this "christian" house! In my spare time!
I am not to be allowed to come here in my kilt and then change into trousers when I work, not to visit services which are published in our local newspaper in kilt ... At the request of my employer (well, ... it was worded like a command...) I have not worn my kilt to work any more but I do not intend to let them tell me what I can or cannot wear in my spare time! I guess I could come to the border of their property and change into trousers there, but although there is a small voice telling me to do exactly this I do not think it would be wise.
But at the moment I am glad that at last someone will TALK with me, I will be able to say something about my choice of clothing!
Other possibilities are not so good, I am my family´s only source of income, my wife´s profession pays very badly and at this time it will be difficult for me to find another job, so when everything is said I will have to give in.
But this time I will fight back as long as possible!!

Dear Hermann,
Your family and your job security are most important, when "they" don't want to listen to the voice of reason...take your loss....for the time being at least.
The only thing you can do is talk and try to explain, but Christian organisations can...a bit like the army (Ackwell had the same problems)...stubborn and old fashioned. They just might not even want to understand.
See trousers as "regulation dress" and wear your kilt in REAL life...that's where we really live anyway.
It sucks big time...I won't argue with that
I wish you all the wisdom and the best of luck!

Well Hermann, as far as church services, there are other churches. Work is another matter. It can't hurt to look for another job on your own time. Meantime you have to protect your families income. Best of luck.

I don't have anything substancial to add Hermann. just wanted to let you know how saddened i am by the discrimination you're encountering. Your employer seems to be very dictatorial rather than open and understanding. However i do feel reasoning with them may be your best course of action at present. I wish you the best of luck and hope for a satisfactory outcome.

Freedom...?
The Internet is supposed to be so free, yet, my server's McAfee filter pulled out Angus' post under the XXX screen for obscenity. Best I can figure is for the word bestiality.
But, I set the level of screening to keep out all the porn spam...
We have met the enemy and he is us.

Dear Graham, I think tartan trews look terrible too. That's why I suggested them and in the loudest tartan possible. I guess I wasn't clear enough in my passive aggression. And I say this with all respect, no sarcasm, and meant simply as a clarification. As our most prolific poster and someone whose style I admire, I totally respect your opinion and agree with it.

Oh my, I did not mean to offend you. I'm very sorry. I just thought that as trews it would be completely unexpected. If I offended you in any way I apologize.

I've belonged to several solid, Bible-believing orthodox Anglican churches. Not only did folks like seeing me in the kilt on Christmas and Easter, but I wasn't alone! In one parish, the senior church warden (who had not so much as a drop of Scots blood in him) wore the kilt on high holy days. In my current parish, the vicar owns a belted plaid! We had a St. Andrew's dinner complete with kilt-clad haggis bearer and piper in 2004.
Regards,
Mark (a proudly kilt-clad Christian)
Disclaimer: I struggle with kilt puritanism ... sometimes I consider utilikilts, sportkilts, and like products as blasphemy! :-\ Perhaps you should try wearing an 8-yarder to work. ;-)

Not just 'bad' but 'sad'...
Hermann - I hope more catholic (in Ignatius's sense of the word not Rome) minds come to bear on the issue. I like to think that Luther would have your back on this one, too. He wasn't a big fan of those who misused their power and influence.
I cannot help wondering why this one person's perception preempts those of all others? After all, you don't mention kilt-wearing concerns voiced by any other boardmember, person at the facility or congregant. Just this one man.
If the other members of the Board and adminstration yield to this man so readily, I fear for the 'Christian' outlook of your House. Seems to me that either the Board has been superceded by a cult of personality built around this man or the Board is being unduly influenced by one person's agenda. Either situation is bad. I'll hold off from further comment that might tank this post.
It would be enlightening to know what, specifically, makes this guy uncomfortable. I think they owe you that in light of issuing you a written directive forbidding you to ever appear on the grounds kilted.
You've got a good view on the "God first, family second and career third" concept. One's principles sometimes must yield to full bellies, a roof over the head, etc. Maybe this current hiccup is an opportunity to help a misguided fellow Christian.
Keep the faith.
