I'm actually stuck. I can't decide on my next kilt because Barbara Tewksbury has delivered my dream kilt already.
Tartan: Douglas Modern, pleated to the sett
Weight: 16 oz.
Yardage: 6-ish? I can't remember, it's nice and heavy!
Customization: Only two buckles, the third is useless.
It's simple, but rather elegant. And now, I can't decide on another! I can't get excited about ordering another kilt, what's wrong with me?

Great question!
Tartan: MacDonald of the Isles Hunting Weathered
Weight: 16 oz
Yardage: 8 yard
Customization: I would ask Robert MacDonald in B.C. to make it. I would fly out for a fitting, and have it done in the military style, box pleated to sett. I really like his work.
Why: Because I have to.

Weight: 16 oz.
Yardage: 8
Customization: The tartan will have to be custom woven in 16 oz as it is only available in 11 oz. stock. I'd also want only 2 straps. Pleated to the red stripe.
Why: I served in the USAF and have always had a lot of pride in that. And, the tartan is absoultely gorgeous.
I think you can get that kilt through J Higgins. The USAFR Pipe Band get their kilts though there.

Tartan: MacLachlan Dress (yellow & black sett)
Yardage: 9 yd (might be 8 yd, by the time I've lost what I need to lose)
Weight: 16 oz, 13 in a pinch
Customization: Pleated to the stripe, and prolly real silver buckles.
That's what I'll be going for, once I get down to my target weight.

Tartan: Young Modern
Weight: 16oz
Yardage: 8yd (give or take at the kilters suggestion)
Customization: Was thinking knife pleated, but after seeing the kingussie that Ryan Ross showed in Post #20, the indecision is upon me. (The symmetry is intriguing.)
Why: Family tartan. If I could only have one kilt, I want to be able to where it anywhere, be it to the store or to a white-tie ball, and have it last long enough for my kids.
HELP: I don't want to thread jack, so can someone PM me a thread that discusses the different pleats. Preferably with some info on how the kingussie lays when seated compared to a regular knife. I couldn't find one when I looked.

You could probably get a descent tartan by using patterns of different colored links in the chain mail.
