I have been deliberately keeping out of this since my last post and only have one brief observation to make on recent contributions.

The UNITED aspect is, whilst it may not be entirely belied, can be seen by modern eyes (as per English Bloke's contribution) to be at least compromised for present day aspirations. That the current Union Flag is as much political and historical as symbolic has been seen in these discussions, but symbols are powerful images and I don't think the issue is going to go away, especially when some are satisfied and some are not.

I don't think the issue should go away. I have enjoyed this thread with all its historical references.

What I don't understand, is why all the references to history when discussing whether Wales should be represented on the union flag in the 21st century. We are living in the 21st century, we don't have to live by what happened 8 centuries ago.

The Welsh people have certainly done their share to put the great in Great Britain. They have also kept their identity for that 8 hundred years. Everyone in the UK knows Wales as a country in its own right. Who cares whether they were ruled by a prince or a king 8 centuries ago.

I love my Union Flag and it is flying in front of my house right now, beside my wifes Stars & Stripes, but I would like to see Wales represented on it.

The Union Flag does not belong to the monarchy or the government or the Royal Navy, it is the national flag of the UK and as such belongs to the people of the UK. So does the government, the monarchy and the Royal Navy for that matter.

The flag of the Royal Navy is the white ensign. They only fly the Union Jack when in port or on the admirals flag ship.

So what would be your take, or perhaps your wife's take since it is her flag, on altering the design of the US flag to include the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico?

As people from outside of the UK have given their take on the Union Flag, maybe she has or has not a take on Puerto Rico.

Currently as an unincorporated territory of the United States it has no status with regard to the flag unless and until a plebiscite gives it full statehood. Then it would add the 51st star.

Wales, on the other hand, is a fully incorporated territory of the United Kingdom .

I thought that you would be starting the "Get the Rubber Chicken on the flag" campaign Grant - call it a "Nunavut Chicken" and Ottawa would have to take notice!

I don't really understand your question. We don't have any commonwealth countries on our flag. Wales is not a commonwealth country, it is part of the nation, part of Great Britain.

Why would anyone want Puerto Rico on the American national flag when it is not part of the nation.
I would never presume to suggest that someone elses flag should be changed, but if one of the 50 states were left off of the US flag, I would probably agree with any American who suggested it should be included.

Here is a question/ challenge... How would you like to see the British flag changed? I agree with you about the inclusion of Wales on the standard. All States are equally represented... Commonwealths are not.... Puerto Rico, and the Northern Mariana Islands.
Even the Union Jack has evolved the past 200 years to include Northern Ireland and the St. Patrick Cross. While Wales has had a much longer union with the British it does not get represented on the Standard. I also believe that one day the six northern counties are returned back to where they belong and that aspect of the flag will be removed. That is my opinion and not a matter of discussion.

As stated earlier the Union flag was but still is my flag, I believe in a united Ireland but that the flag should not change despite that. The Welsh have their own national flag as do the Scottish, English and Norther Irish. True the flag does not identify Wales but it does hold them within it's folds. It also does not identify the Manx nor the Channel Islands. McClef, although I see his point, does have a choice of what flag he can wave. You see, hundreds of thousand fought and died for that freedom and they did so under the Union flag in two world wars and the many before those and those battles after. And not just men from those four countries but also individuals from the republic of Ireland, from the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and from all corners of the globe. It is that flag that is the canton of so many other nations to signify their connection with Britain.
